Why do Z/28's weigh more that RS's?

I was just reading in the tech section and saw that Z/28's weigh 168 lb's. more than RS's, does anyone know why?

It's not an exact science. A car's weight will vary slightly depending on how it's optioned. If both cars are optioned identically, they should weigh the same. The TPI setup on the Z28 wouldn't add that much weight. I believe that the RS was available with the same upgraded interior that the Z28 was available with, so I think it boiled down to a difference in how the two were optioned.

It was probably because the RS came with the V6. If you add the weight for the V8 option, it should be pretty close to the same.

Normally, published curb weights are the base curb weights for that model. Therefore, the ones here are probably for a base, V6 RS vs a base V8 Z28.

Z28's weigh more because they have more aero cladding. This is also why Mustang LX's always beat the GT's.

No, the RS has the same ground effects as the Z28.

The weight factor has a lot to do with the options that came on a car. Z28s tended to have more options than the RS, hence the greater weight. That is why GTAs tend to be the heaviest of F-bodies because they came with the most options stock. The Formulas tend to be the lightest due to their "sparse" nature.

Also, things like "sound deadening" can add to the weight. And DO NOT compare a V6 to a V8 car.

Z28's had thicker swaybars, therefore heavier. Also they has some extra bracing in the engine bay, one piece from the cowl to passenger side hood hinge and one from the passenger side strut tower to the pass side sub frame. No, it probably does not add up to 168 lbs. I'd imagine the 16" rims are heavier than say V6 15" rims. Plus slight larger tire size. A top of the line interior will weight more than the base interior (better seats, more padding, more weight).
