Re: van nuys plant

The (Brazil) indicates that GM Brazil used that color number for Black

As for telling whether or not your number is low or high. The last 6 digits would indicate it. The lower the number the earlier it was made. The last six digits if they read 100001 that would be the first one off the line that particular year for Chevrolet at that plant.

No actually that's not the case, the year is represented in the VIN by the 10th character. 1992 would be "N" so you VIN should end in NL144692. "L" stands for Van Nuys Assembly plant, and the 6 digit number is just the sequence number, basically the number that you car came off the line in. Starting at 100001 for Camaro, give or take a few, your would have been the 44,692nd Camaro built in 92. Not the exact number but very close.

Your story is really cool Leonard, and I think it's neat how the workers signed the vehicle, and the paint shop left the markings they did. That one Z/28 holds a place in all those workers hearts and memories.

I'm also in the boat as saying it would be sweet to see modern pics of it, just to see what one was supposed to look like right off the line all these years later.
Amen. I read this whole thread like a mystery novel. Great story! Looking forward to pix from Leonard. Thanks

Re: van nuys plant

I just discovered this thread about an hour ago, and have followed it right to here - what a great story - I don't think I know anyone who's a car buff that wouldn't want to have an experience like Leonard's. It's also nice to finally learn a bit of history around the Van Nuys Assembly Plant. I have been curious about where my car was built ever since I bought it ('90 RS Convertible). Thank you, Leonard, for sharing your story with all of us.

Required reading for any thirdgen fanatic is Michael Lamm's book "Camaro, the third generation"besides
early development of the third gen starting in the mid
'70s,there are lots of good pics of the inside of the van
nuys plant and '86 model 3rd gens of all descriptions
on the assembly lines.I was watching the news when i
saw that last 3rd gen roll off the line-i took mine out
and laid some rubber in tribute!

Re: van nuys plant

Leonard's story posted by JT was truly awesome and suspenseful.

I'm strictly an early thirdgen guy, but reading that story, I couldn't help but feel all the emotions of Leonard, the assembly line workers, the having to wake up early at the hotel and signing in at the guardshack to see a part of automotive history which would never be seen again by anyone, the UAW jobs lost, etc.

Really great story. It sticks with you. I feel like I was there just reading it, and yeah it's triumphant but melancholy at the same time. Kudos to you Leonard for documenting this moment in time for us all.

The text in my signature is from a 1992 photo sent to me in a set of dozens of photos, taken at the Van Nuys plant. A big sign out in front of the plant proudly showed that writing way up high for all the passing cars to see.. more on that later.

Lenoard, thank you for sharing your story and pics/documentation. This is quite a story indeed.

The greatest thing to me is that you have kept the car, and kept it put away with great care!

Re: van nuys plant

Great Thread!! This may be in the wrong thread but my 88 vert has a sticker on the drivers window top right corner that is badly faded. From what I can tell, it says Van Nuys plant and then UAW. Does anyone have a good picture of this sticker for my restoration?

Go to google maps. There's a street view picture of it. Looks like a big furniture store is there now called "Living Spaces."

Great link...Thanks for sharing.

Interesting that all of the cars in the last picture awaiting delivery are complete sans the lower front wrap around. As someone who has loaded/unloaded a 91 Z on/off a trailer many times, I can see why.

If the 11th digit of your Vin# is an N it is Norwood, an L is Van Nuys.
