Do Engine RPO's mean anything?

We've all heard the various engine RPO codes like L98, L03, and my own LG4, but does anyone know what they mean? Are they just random combinations of letters and numbers or do they stand for anything?

They are semi-random codes that mean something only after they are assigned by GM. I say semi-random, because sometimes they are assigned for a reason (LT-1 in '70 Camaro/Vette, LT1 in '93 Camaro/Vette...).
