Why did chevy put a deisel in a s-10. Probably what is in the third gen. I would guess it was available and they just threw it in there.

My parents had an '82-'83 Chevy Chevette (sh0vette) that had a 4 cyl. deisel in it. They got it becuase of the alleged fuel mileage and the low price of deisel at the time. I would think that someone could have ordered it that way, but really doubt it. Did you get the VIN off it to check what is supposed to be in there?

alright well I drove the car and that engine has no power what so ever. It smokes and smells just like a diesel. None of the guages work or anything. Now the thing is there is no vin. The plate has been removed. I looked under the car and I can tell this car has been in a wreck. There is a bunch of weld spots and everything. This car is $500..lol The outside looks pretty good and interior til u pop the hood and look under neath the car. I dunno why it has a diesel, but this car has been pieced together.

I had a diesel Chevette too. It was GREAT! Not only would it spank a gas Chevette, (i know, but it was something) it got 45-50 MPG (57 highway trip was the best). I had it in the junior year of High school (84-85). I could put $10 in the thing, drive myself and all my friends to and from school, drive to work, and drive all over all weekend.
The rear end locked up on the way home from work one night and i skidded off the road backwards. About a month later, i traded it, most of my savings, and my soul for my '82 T/A, the one i still have.
I can't wait to get a diesel for daily driving again. Definetly not a 3rd gen, more like a F-250/350 Powerstroke.
It's amazing what cobblers can do. All that trouble, and they can't even get $500 for it. HAHAHA.

This is getting off-topic, but my tranny guy has been putting 2.8 and 3.1 litre V6's in Chevettes with 700R4's. Those little things go like stink.

I trust you know enough to walk away from that.
I have to agree, that little deisel got the mileage, but in MN we had a problem with the fuel turning to jello while it was parked outside at work during the winter. Add to that ours had a tranny problem, so take what little go it had and cut that in half.
I wasn't sad when they traded that in.
