My convertible has a black interior and when the top is up the backseat area is very dark. On a recent trip to the junkyard I picked up a rear hatch light assembly. I installed it at the back of the console right where the ashtray is located. It was quite simple to install. I fabricated a panel out of an old black plastic interior panel. I mounted the light to this, ran the wires through the console and hooked them up to the passenger side under dash light. Then I screwed the assembly in place using the ashtray screws The nice thing about this method is that I can easily return the car to original by removing the light and putting the ashtrasy back in. I'm not sure if anyone else has done this but it was quite easy to do and very inexpensive(junkyard charged me $5 for 2 light assemblies). Now I have plenty of interior lighting.

 

Nice idea. The ash tray is useless anyway. I suppose I could add yet another interior light. I've already added one in the passenger foot well and to light up the center console when it is open.

Yet another reason why 92s are the koolest. My side panels are different than the early years and have integrated lights on both sides. I never realized that these panels were unique till i looked closely at some verts over the summer.

Excellent Idea! I have a 89 RS with a black interior and the back of the car is like a black hole at night. My 92 convertible lights up nicely. I think I'll try the light on my 89 RS.

My 91 TA has lights in the backseat on both of the side panels. They are the same as the one in the trunk, but I think they are different than the lights in a hardtop.

 

I was aware that the 92 cars had the lights in the side panels. I did pick up 2 lights from the boneyard with the intention of cutting them into the sidepanels, however after some thought(and realizing convertible parts are worth their weight in gold)i decided against it in case i messed up the panels.As I said in my earlier post this way was very easy and i could return the car to original condition quite easily. Besides the console is readily available, if I had done any damage to it ,it would be much cheaper to replace than the side panels.I'll try and post some pics as soon as I can.
