How do I know if my engine is original?
I have a 1982 Camaro Z28 with a 305. I was just wondering how would I find out if the engine is original or where are the numbers on the engine?
Thanks!
Thanks!
racer2pro, I just asked the same question a little earlier today. Below is what RB83L69 replied to my post:
"On the deck on the pass side, just in front of the head, there is a sort of "pad" of deck
that sticks out past the head. The factory stamps 2 sets of numbers in there. One of
them is a code for what kind of engine it is; the other is the last few digits of the VIN of the car it's installed in."

the pad they are referring to is in front of the passenger side head. if you look at the passenger side part of the water pump where it bolts to the block, it is right there. i think the alternator on your car is on the passenger side and if it is you may need to remove it to clean the number pad so you can read it. the numbers there should be the same as the last 6 or 8 numbers in your vin. i could be wrong, but i think crate motors don't have any numbers there. my buddies car has a crate motor and we looked for the id numbers and the pad was blank. the other place on small block chevys that id numbers were stamped is on ibelieve the drivers side rear of the block where the tranny bellhousing mounts. hope this helps.
