88 IROC-Z came from no where...
Hey all, its me again, I'm still searchin for a car, I've decided to wait another week or so, before I actually buy a first car. I've also decided to drop the thought of the 87 IROC-Z, its old and needs too much work. I think I'm gonna stick with the 91 RS 305.
I came home thinking today, I hope there will be an IROC-Z for me somewhere. I want it so much, theres gotta be one destined for me.
So I get home and my mom tells me that my dad found a camaro, but not only that it is an IROC-Z, and its red. Thats just what I wanted, IROC-Z, red, manual, TTops, and thats exactly what this thing had.
Very weird that I've been waitin so long for my car, hoping to find what I want. And my patience might have paid off. If I got the 91 RS 305, that would be settling. But if I found an Iroc, that would be my dream, I would buy it instantly.
I went down to where the IROC-Z was, it was gorgeous. Everything was clean, interior, exterior, it was perfect! Beats the cr@p out of the 87 I was thinkin of fixin up.
Now everyone, here comes the destiny-type part of my story. See I was hired to work at this supermarket. I just got the job last week, but will be workin next. My mom said if I get a job to help pay for car, a car will just come out just for you. I didn't really believe her, I still didn't find that "one" yet. So I got the job, still no car that has my name on it. Then today I hear about the IROC-Z it meets all the specifications that i wanted. Not only that it is located in my town! This car came out of nowhere, I have never ever seen it before. Even more weird it was located in the parking lot, get this... of where I'm gonna work!
This absolutely feels like destiny. That I get a job, the car comes out of nowhere, its in MY town, it meets all my specifications, and its parked outside where I'm gonna work. I was just hoping it didn't cost much, PLEASE! I was thinking maybe no more than $5000. My dad called them, they said $7000, I cant remember if it was BO. I almost dropped to the floor. The car destined for me is overpriced, other than that, it's perfect. So I guess my question is this, do you think $7000 for an '88 IROC-Z, manual, ttops, 305 HO, red, is overpriced? Do you think I can lower this price by say $2000 or more? What should I do?
All help, opinions, advice, would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, Tom

Sounds like a cherry...even if he won't budge on the price, it sounds like it's too good to pass up!
I say go for it, and spend the extra money. You'll kick yourself if you let it go because of a few bucks...especially if you see someone driving it around town, while you settled for the older model without t-tops or a fixer-upper or something....
Take the opportunity...

You're talking about a very fine automobile, the combination of accessories makes it a little rare... 5 speed and T-roof os THE perfect car IMO... I had to settle for a non T-roof and it kinda bugs me... $7k I'd say if it's got 50-70k miles... otherwise they may be asking a bit much, but you will be kicking yourself if you don't buy this car, so start calling long lost relatives and rich friends
... you gotta get that car!
I would bet you've got a little time with it at that price, most of the people that can plunk that much down for a camaro would have done so already, and a lot of people are scared of paying 7k for a used car, just because it's 13 years old... a lot of people will not realize just what they are looking at.

7K if it was a 350 maybe...damn that seems like a lot. guess id have to see the car in person to tell, but id say like 5k is what it should really go for.

Quite often the 305 5 speed cars will command as much or more than a 350 car. The 350 cars are more common than the TPI 5 speeds, and for some people like me, a 5 speed is a necessity. I feel lucky to have found my 5 speed GTA. It's got nowhere near the power that my IROC will have (as soon as I get rid of the POS slipping trans) but the fun factor is much higher.

keep looking, thats too much.It cant be perfect, theres no such thing.$5000 is pushing it.You will get a better car for less, you will have to be patient though.Did you look at the car, drive it?A Good looking car doesnt make a good car.Compare that $7000 to its book of about $2000 and ask is it worth that much more because of t-tops and a 5 speed.

If it's under 40,000 miles and in the condition you say it's in, then $7,000 is a good price. If it's over 50,000 miles then $7,000 is pushin it. Unless its rare or been taken excellent care of. Ask the owner lots of questions. If it's under 40,000. buy it!
I would have to agree that that it is overpriced by approx 2000; but here's my advice:
You live only once and a life not spent actually living a little is really not worth living at all. I know that you are pretty young ("first car" clued me in) and just starting to get out into real world adult life things (like car payments, insurance, etc.); but your parents are giving you an option that is pretty much too good to be true. From what I gathered they are willing to help you out a bit (totally cool) which is going to enable you to actully get the cars of your dreams. You will regret this if you don't do what you feel is going to make you happy. I can honestly say "it's only money" (just for the record-I am far from financially set for life)- if this car will make you happy- do it! Like I said before, life is short and you live only once you have to make the best of it while you are still around to have the opportunity; you never know what tomorrow will bring. Another thing- there is nothing like driving an IROC (trust me) - I fell in love with that car the very first time I sat in one @ 3 1/2 years old and have no doubt you will fall in love with this car you have in mind. Just be careful and have fun with the IROC

Car: 91 Camaro RS Update: Sold Camaro, now own a "91" Corvette.

Is it the Original Owner? I bought my 91 RS from the original owner for $6800.00 with 70,000 miles on it. It was very clean inside and out. I looked at a lot of other Camaros that were between $3500 to $5500. and they were all junky looking. In my opinion, You Get What You Pay For. Even if The car is over Blue Book Value, You still have too consider how the car was taken care of. For a car that old to still look that nice tells you what kind of care it's been given throughout the years. Sometimes it's hard to put a Dollar figure on that.

I've been offered $4,000 for a V6 RS merely because it looks like it just came off the showroom floor. Original, unmolested cars do command a premium...how much depends on the car and the situation.

I'll sell you this IROC for $13,500.
You all may now proceed to tell me I'm nuts.
I think nice third gens, especially IROCs, GTAs, TTAs, etc., are going up in value as we get further away from the end of their production. We are now ten years out and I don't see these nice examples going down in value any further. If you want a good one, buy it now, they won't get any cheaper.

You are in the drivers seat as far as negotiating a price. It is a LOT easier to be a buyer than a seller right now. Make him a fair offer. But be prepared to walk away from it, or your emotions will get the better of you. Remember that a clean car that hasn't been molested or in an accident will be the better deal in the long run than trying to fix up someone elses problems.
