why does the VIN say my car is an A-body???

Hi, I thought GM used the 4th digit of the VIN for like the last 20-30 years to say what kind of cars these were. My car, one of them, is an '84 T/A, but the vin says 1G2AW87G23L247096. ??? Just wondering. The RPO code sheet says the same. Odd the car has rear disks and doesn't say it has J65, all of it looks factory. I also don't remember it saying it has posi, which it also has. just wondering. Thanks!

This is why the vin decoeder on this site says you have:

<font face="Verdana, Arial" size="2">Here are the results for your query on: 1G2AW87G23L247096
Made in: United States
Manufacturer: General Motors
Make: Pontiac
A is NOT a known code for the Carline Code!
Carline Series: Trans Am, Formula
Body Type: 2 door coupe
G is NOT a known Engine Code!
2 is the CHECK DIGIT.
3 is NOT a known Model Year Code!
Assembly Plant: Van Nuys
Production Sequence: 247096</font>
So the VIN does say f-body, the problem is in the year/engine code.

This is the first portion of my vin, and let me see if I can still read it without going to the decoder
1 = USA made
G = GM
1 = Chevy
AP = restraint system
87 = Body type
G = L69 engine
8 = check digit
E = 1984
L = Van Nuys.

------------------
1984 L69 5-speed Z28, T-tops, Polished Irocs, Dynomax headers, Flowmaster exhaust, 14.87 in the quarter. Currently 50,370 original miles.

Ah, OK, now were making sense...I was wondering what was going on with that, which is the reason for bringing up this thread...cool, so at least I now know it's a WS6 as well...
