man have I got a mystery on my hands (Very long, need help)
*************************************
This is really long, if you just want to skim it or can answer off the bat this is my problem
1)everything buy my RPOs point to a 1LE, what on earth is going on???
2)where can I find records of SCCA race winner and car to match. or does anyone know, my car was driven by grant something(or something grant) and supposedly was the 2 time SCCA Showroom Stock champ.
Here we go....
Well back when I was more naive I bought a car a advertised as an 92 X 1LE race car that was the two time SCCA showroom stock national champ and was a ofcoarse a 1LE. I never even checked the RPOs, but probibly should have. Well the car was probibly the race car that was driven by some guy named grant, still need to do more research.
Here is my main problem, the RPOs make no sense, everything in the car points to a 1LE, special heater core, proportioning valve, sway bars, (have baer kit on now, so know idea about brakes), no side molding on the doors, no fog lights, aluminum drive shaft, 1LE T5, G92 etc.
Here is where things really get wierd and you are my new best friend if you can figure out this stuff.
RPO codes say was originally a white car (it is purple!)
-with white rims(nope),
-fog lights(nope),
-radio(nope, even has the cover plate),
-A/c(nope, the climate control is heater only, and i do not have a diverter valve, or bigger blower fan/heater core)
-Radio (nope but did come with wiring harness??)
-grey seat belts(nope, badge)
-grey interior(nope badge)
And the fishy list goes on, i will look it up tommorow again.
If you are still reading, once again thanks a lot! Finally uncovered some records and this makes NO sense.
Fuel tank $2000 (guy I bought it from was second owner and said that the original owner baffled the fuel tank to be smaller..why? it holds 15.5 gallons now)
Brakes (And some scribled notes, can not really make out says something about smaller size) and I forget how much money, but not that much, like 200
Any idea of what this all means???

First, does the VIN on the RPO sheet match the cars? A lot of times when a console is changed out, the original RPO sheet goes with. Do you have open vents on the dashboard near the doors? A/C delete cars had vents in the center and pull levers underneath, no side vents. Are there any signs underhood? how about behind the door panels? As for the radio wiring, Ive heard that a lot of Camaros came wired for options not chosen, so that may be the explanantion. As for a new best friend if this helps, my last best friend took a bullet for me, are you prepared to do that? >

I'd have to go with one of two things, either the car is or isn't a 1LE. If the Vin on the SPID doesn't match the VIN on the car, then the car probably is a 1LE, you might be able to get the RPO's from the VIN number at a GM dealer, but without them the car could be anything.
As far as chasing down the original owner is concerned, I would recommend a post here:
www.sccaforums.com on the "Anything Goes" forums.
Many of the people at this site have been around SCCA for a very long time. Chances are that one of them knows a "Grant"...

Thanks for all the help so far guys.
ok it this is what i could gather. RPO code VIN matches VIN upfront. more then 1/2 my RPO codes do not match up.
My car is a 92 Z-28, hawiian orchid
I have side vents, near the doors. Which means no a/c factory right?
what do these mean
UQ1 : RADIO PROVISIONS, FOR STEREO
MK6 : TRANSMISSION, MAN 5 SPD, B0RG WARNER, 2.95 1ST, O/D
MM5 : MERCHANDISED TRANS, MAN 5 SPD PROVISIONS
6DB : SPRING, COMPUTER SELECTED, FRONT, LEFT HAND
7DB : SPRING, COMPUTER SELECTED, FRONT, RIGHT HAND
8NN : SPRING, COMPUTER SELECTED, REAR, LEFT HAND
I have a lot of wierd options, I could not find a match for these RPO codes
1SZ
IPB
GU6
R9W
R92(Z?)
Oh ya, I also have an oil cooler, and no sound detening (which were 1LE options right?)
Damn, project86 IROC, that is quite a friend you had.

Well, the vents on the side indicate you at one time HAD ac. On all the non A/C cars Ive ever seen, there are only the outlines, no holes. The GU6 Is a 3.42 rear, the G92,also 3.42, is what Ive heard the 1LE s to come with. The only thing that gets me is the fog lights. 1LEs had fog light delete, so I think you are looking at a phony. Did you check for signs of white paint? BTW, no friend of mine has ever taken a bullet for me, just a joke. I swear though, the way my friends leave me, youd think there was a sniper pickin em off

I am totally sure the car was always purple, no one but the factory could have painted the interior, and beneath the weather stripping. Final question, do must people have such inaccurate RPOs?
My RPO sheets have always matched the factory equipped options. Now, buying cars 13-15 years after the factory last touched them, doesnt mean the options CURRENTLY match, but thats multiple owners in between. Where in VA are you? Id like to see the car, if nothing else, please post ALL of your RPO #'s.
Well your RPO's are how your car left the factory. At the bottom of the RPO sheet it'll list your color combinations... check em out, if they don't match for purple, then your cars been repainted. Also there's a good chance that your car ISN'T a 1LE. The only way to get a car with 1LE was to delete the a/c. If you have A/C it was probably just a car ordered with all the performance options, and used to race. GM wasn't advertising the 1LE, not all that many people knew about them at the time.
If you post all the RPO's it'd be easy to see what the car was originally, RPO's never lie, people just sometimes misinterpret them.

It is fairly common in SCCA racing to just buy a regular car that has a performance variant and upgrade the basica car to performance specs. This is because almost everything on the car has to be touched to make it competitive anyways and the Hi-Po (Think Mustang Cobra R) versions are usually much more expensive. Would you rather cut apart a $25000 V8 base model or a $50000 limited edition car if the end product is going ot be the same anyways?
I say its a fake, or a clone.

I am in Charlottesville right now, but I will be in Vienna over the christmas break. I would happily show you my car sometime. The car was diffinitely always purple, under the carpets, beneath the dash, under the gas tank, everywhere is purple. The color code is U9802, no idea what color that is(I got the White from the RPOs).
The previous owner admited that the original owner the guy who raced it did fishy things to make a "factory stock" car have as much competitive advantage as possible. The motor cost a fortune to have all the rods and pistons matched, and the entire thing super balanced a blueprinted, with some machine work for better oiling, and this is for a "stock" 305!. He cliamed he really did not know that much, he just bought the car to teach racing school in.
Why is *** torturing me.
Found this receipt today, VIN on papers match mine
1) install fog light switch (umm no fog lights, but i do have a switch, always wondered why, it leads to nothing)
2) rework cat y pipe (maybe just a type-o, it was G92 from factory, and it is now)
3) conversion to small brakes?????
4) Blueprint gas tank????
5) still camera mount
6) remove RR caliper wieghts
7) install ps cap
8) Bolt roll cage with inspection holes
9) race prep. rear end
10) Drill dust caps???
11) install door wedge plates????
12) trim front fender tabs??
Lots of parts numbers on the back
Total Cost: $7,500 !!!
Brake and suspension cost $1,500
Convertion to smaller brakes $1,500
Dated 6/01/92
Found the dealer recite also, it was $15,672 for the car 4/01/92
Any idea what some of those things are, what on earth is smaller brakes, I have some old z-28 spindle in a box that came with the car.
Once again if anyone can tell me what some of those things on the bill mean you are a wiser man then I, I will post my RPOs tommorow. Thanks for all the help guys, while we are on the subject, what do you think I can get for her with a fresh coat of paint, the interior is like knew and tons of performance add ons with 28k on the odometer, less on most parts.

That is my brother’s car. It was never a white car it is not possible everything is purple the Engine bay, under the carpet, behind the dash, behind all the interior panels. But the RPO codes say the car is white. The RPO sticker looks fake compared to the one in my 89 IROC.

wow, sounds like you have quite the mystery car there. my only question is, what does it run?
with all the blueprinting and everything id love to see a time. If nothing else comes of this, at least you have a good story to tell with the car
good luck man.

good luck man. Based on everythign you've posted I'd classify the car as not stock, not original, modified. As for what you could sell it for, its hard to say. Its not really typical of most thirdgens. It could bring more or less depending on if you find someone that wants a modded car, or if they want a stock car.

Not to be sarcastic, however we all wish we had a 1LE. As anowner of one, who had no idea of what I had purchased you may be better off. You cannot buy**** from a garden of the mill auto parts store. I have driven several IROC-Z camaros and despite the privelege of owning one there is NO difference in performance. I hope after braces on both daughters that I can save this fine memory for my son. After all guys, isn't this is what it,s all about. CONTINUE THE TRADITION-the best looking Camaros are the THIRDGEN. So long for now, GOOD to have fellow lovers of Chevy strength
any chance the vin tab on the dash, and the rpo code from the center console are from another car... i have heard of stranger things happening. best of luck, tom
