Original radio

Does someone have a picture or can they tell me what an original radio for a 85 iroc looks like? I believe mine had an equalizer. I found a delco radio with the equalizer from an 89 firebird would that be the same for an IROC?

Thanks, Tom

I forgot which year exactly, but they changed the plug shape on the back of the radio at one point. I think that radio will plug right into your car, but it may not. I plugged a radio from a 91 Firebird into my old 84 Z28. Of course, it's probably not going to match your car too well since it's grey and the Camaro's trim pieces are black.

GM changed the plug size for the 1989 model
year. The 89 Delco radio will not fit your wiring on the 85. Check for after market
adapter.

The year GM changed the plug varies by car and model line and dumb luck. Any early GM am/fm/cassette will probably plug into the stock harness and will look relatively at home as long as the buttons are all black, the illumination is white or green, and the clock is green. Pontiac radios typically have orange/red lighting and a orange clock. Some Pontiac radios have gray ***** as well. In addition to the later radios having different plugs they also use a smaller antenna plug, but adapters can be found for under $10.
Incidently recently a guy I know used a two piece radio from a Calais or somethign to that effect. With some wiggling it fit the dash and looked right at home, and it was more in tune with the camaro's interior since it was all push button.

If you look at any car GM made in '85 you're almost certain to see the same radio... only differences are the faceplates...

Edit: My stock '84 Firebird radio had green lighting... If anybody wants it, it still works... $10 shipped I don't have the ***** though (too long a story to bother explaining LOL).

1985 UT4:

For 1985 this unit was available on all 85 Pontiac models except the 1000, GrandxPrix, Bonneville, and Parisienne. It was standard on the 6000 STE.

Versions of the UT4 can be found at:
aatechnologies
for about 130 bills.

I've looked thru my resources and I was able to find the following RPO codes for the 85 Camaro.

UT4: Electric Tune AM-FM Stereo Cassette, Clock, Seek, Scan.
U69: Radio, AM-FM Push Button
YE1: AM-FM Stereo Radio w/ERSS
YE2: AM-FM Stereo, Seak, Scan, Cassette, Clock
YE3: AM-FM Stereo, Seek, Scan, Cassette, Clock
YF1: Electronic tuned AM-FM Stereo w/ERSS
Now none of these coincide with the RPOs in the thirdgen RPO decoder but those RPO's are from later years.
The typical AM/FM cassette with EQ deck used in the IROCs is the UX1 Radio. Here's a picture of the UX1 in my 87 Iroc.

To determine what radio is correct for your car, you'll have to go by the RPO's. If you don't have them, you could try to find a sales brochure for 1985 and see what was available in that year then you should have it narrowed down.

Also here's a picture of the same UX1 radio but in Pontiac trim. Note the gray ***** and also the backlighting is orange.

If you do go with a UX1 radio make sure it has the power button on the front and that the tape deck works. These units use a blaupunkt tape deck that typically isn't working.

Since we're on the topic of factory radios and I'm bored with a new camera to play with, here are pictures of various Delco radios.

First is the typical GM cassette deck, used thru the 80's and into the early 90's.
Shown here in a 92 S10, also keep in mind this car has the old style GM wiring harness.

Second is the same radio but with late model plug and in Pontiac trim. This was stock in my 91 Formula.

Third is the UX1 radio/cassette with EQ as was stock in my 91 Firebird, again in pontiac trim.

Fourth is the delco radio, stock in my 91RS convertible. This one is kind of an oddball as it has the same Blaupunkt tape decks as the UX1 radio but doesn't have the EQ. Almost all 90-92 Camaros seem to use this deck. Note also the yellow lettering.

Regretfully I don't have a factory CD player (camaro or firebird) available to display. Also I'm sure there were several other variants in the earlier years, unfortunately they don't show up that often and I'm not sure which would go with which.
The radio pictured in my 92 S10 is the radio you find in most 80's GM vehicals, the EQ decks showed up in higher end cars, Z28's, Irocs, cadillacs, etc. The all pushbutton UT4 radio above I believe was only used on some Firebirds, most often with the digital dash or steering wheel radio controls. I dont believe it was ever used on the Camaro.

Mine is the UX1 : RADIO, AM/FM STEREO CASSETTE EQUALIZER as above in Drew's posts. Last summer the cassette died (would eject the tape when I put it in). The radio's a Delco with a Blaupunkt cassette mechanism and I had to replace a belt. It's about a 50 cent part that the stereo place charged $8 for and would have charged $50 to replace it.

Some of the fiero supply places sell belts for the blaupunkt decks too... I've never messed with them since I don't listen to tapes and all my decks work... but they're supposed to be an easy repair.

Probably a bulb. The only thing not lit on mine is the equalizer.
