Slp Performance Package
Just a quick question. How much of a boost did the SLP Performance package really give cars back in 1991? The advertisements I've found on it say that it increased power by 50HP at 5500 RPM, and one Motor Trend write up on it quoted a max power rating of 266HP at 5500 RPM and 360+ ft/lbs of torque. Yet I found another Car craft article on the 1991 Firebird line up and they quoted a power rating of 290 HP @ 5500 RPM. Which one is correct?

Give it a tuneup and put it on a dyno :-)
I would honestly love to see a tuned SLP package car put down on the dyno and than get some track times.
Do u have the complete package cam and all?
I'd prolly guess 240ish at the wheels so your assumptions are about right.
Most stockers put down high 190's to 215 or so. The few good running stockers I have seen have put down 225-230 or so.
Also look up the GTA Source Page, it has the article/advertsement for the SLp Package.

It was rated @ 50 flywheel hp @ 5,500rpm
i bought my kit (cam oil pan and all) back in 92 and it all worked but the chip and runners.. the slp crank pully felt about as good (power wise) as the whole kit !!!!!!
the SLP chip shut down @ 5,000 rpm

I thought the kit just consisted of the runners, headers, cold air intake, 2otl catback exhaust and chip? What's this cam that everybody talks about? In either case, I have the whole package in my car. After I installed it along with an AFPR and a few other mods, I was able to take down stock LT1s and Mustang 4.6L cars. I'm getting ready to put the car back on the road again this spring... I'll definitely get it dynoed.

put the stock chip back in if you have already!!!!!
unhook your knock sensor, if a maf car and bump your timing up around 12 degs base
set your fuel psi to around 47-51 set that @ the track along with timing..
SLP has 3 different cams I had the big 1 but I think only the smallest cam was E-legal

Nope SLP did not modify any thirdgen Camaros. The SLP Performance parts were available since the late 80's, but it wasn't until 91 when they officially offerred the package on V8 Firebirds. It was also in 91 when they rolled out the Firehawks.

You are right. The kit never came with a Cam. The performance ratings you have seen were what SLP posted back in the late 80's through 92. Even though the made several cam's for the TPI cars, they were not part of the it due to emissions.
The 50hp gain was at the peak. The 350tpi cars ran in the low 14's with the parts you listed with out any tuning (TPS, IAC, timming, etc.).

I thought I posted dyno's for mine, hmmm....seems like they were somewhere on here.
I'm running a custom tune that I've done also because the SLP chip frankly sucked a$$. I mean it seemed good but once I got m car tuned just for my engine, what a difference it made!

The cam and oil pan were add ons from SLP to the "kit"..
anyone could have the SLP kit dealer installed.. If dealer installed it, it came with a sticker under the hood.... (so dumb dealers couldnt give ya crap)
the kit could have been installed by the dealer later than the car was built..

The Firehawk 3rd gens got a completely different engine. SLP removed the stock engine, and replaced it with a 350HP 350cid. Saw one go on Barrett-Jackson for $20,500 with 13,000 original miles in, maybe 2002 or 2003.

I can verify the SLP chips suck statement.
I can also verify the Firehawk bin was a vette bin with a fudged injector constant lol
I was so PO'ed when I got my hands on a virgin one lol.
Oh well.
Just like evey other aftermarket chip I see for the most part.

I'd say there were only about 10 constants changed, (read: not including table values) so I guess it was better than nothing. I can only presume this was because they had to be 50 state legal...

I've tweaked the SLP chip in my car. Man... I'm surprised at how unrefined it was. I was running rich at idle and lower RPMs with the SLP chip installed in it's stock form.
I'm eager to see how the SLP Package does on a stock L98. I just finished putting together my second package for my second GTA...
