The eighth letter in the v.i.n. number should be F for the 305 tpi. For the 350tpi, it's 8. If you can find the RPO label under the console lid or in the rear storage compartment, it will list LB9 for the 305. Hope this helps. Chris

you can look at the RPO codes in the center console if you dont have one look at the block from the passenger side on the back of the block with a flash light you might have to move a couple of wires out of the way hopefully you can see it it will say 5.0L or 5.7L thats the best way

I put some fender covers on the fender and the engine and climbed up in there with light. There is no way on a 91 L98 you are going to see the casting # for the engine size. Not without some kind of dissassembly. I would imagine the same for the 5.0's. But, by moving the wiring loom a little and spraying some carb cleaner at the right front of the block deck behind the alternator, you can easily read the date code and suffix code. With that suffix code, you can go to this web site:
Chevy Engine Codes Menu
and look up the suffix code. It also explains the date code.
example: V0112CMP CMP being the suffix code

Actually there is a 5.0L or 5.7L cast right on the block where the trans bellhousing bolts up to the engine, my 87 GTA has it, my 89 IROC has it and my 91 RS has it. I think that is on the driver side, I think.
Thank you sir, i have do indeed have a 305.
