IROC I.D.

I was wondering if there was any way of telling if my car is an IROC. I have searched the boards, but have unsuccessfully found a way to I.D. my car. I have a 1985. It was repainted, so there are no badges or decals of any kind. It has IROC wheels and the IROC hood, but a previous owner suspected those were just added & were not on that car from the factory. When I retrieve the VIN information it says 1985 CHEVROLET CAMARO, but nothing about being an IROC, or a Z28. I looked up an IROC VIN from a car on eBay and it said the same thing as mine, but nothing about being an IROC. The badges I have on my rear bumper and on my front quarter panel areas all say Z28. It originally had a 305 Tuned Port Injection engine, but I was told those also came in just the Z28 models.

If anyone knows a good way to tell if I have an IROC or if they can tell by my VIN I would very much appreciate the information.

Thanks

If you still have your RPO codes in your center console, the IROC Sport Equipment Package is RPO B4Z. As far as I know, there were no Iroc-Z emblems in 1985. I think they were all Z28 emblems. Also, fog lights were only available on Irocs.

I don't think IROC wheels were available until '87. And that really doesn't matter anyway. Hell, my '92 RS had an IROC grill when I bought it. Body parts are easy to swap. Your best bet is to check the RPO codes. There might be some in the rear glove box too.

I have an 85 IROC. As stated, the RPO is B4Z. The car has 16-inch single line wheels (check the door placard to verify that the car was equipped with 16's--that in itself should tell you what you need to know). The only exterior badges are the rockers and rear bumper, both of which read Z28. In the interior, pass side, there's a Z28 badge with IROC-Z written beneath. Check for fogs and the wonderbar.

Sorry, I didn't know where to post.

I do not have fog lights at all. It has a grill like say... a 1991 RS camaro. I will have to check B4Z code. The dash emblem says Z28 Tuned Port Injection. So... there were plain Z28's with TPI engines?

This post was a lot of help, thanks.

My IROC was an LG4, a carbed 305 . Off hand, I'd say your car isn't an IROC. Why is it important?

Yes plain 85 Z28's came with TPI 305's. I had one myself. Sounds like thats what you have with Iroc rims added. The hoods were the same, louvres, on the Z28 and Iroc-z in 85.

Z28 quite likely, IROC-Z? Probably not.

It'll tell you in your RPO codes.

PM your VIN# and I will tell you for sure (I can look it up on the GM database).

As far as I'm concerned, if it didn't come with the B4Z option from the factory, it's not a real Iroc-Z.

Seems to be some bad info in this thread. 1985 IROC's had wheels labeled "IROC-Z", a dash labeled "IROC-Z", and side door graphics that said "IROC-Z". The rear bumper does say "Z28", and the TPI cars have lettering on the left rear bumper that says "Tuned Port Injection". Carb versions don't of course.

It's almost impossible to ID a real IROC without the B4Z entry on the RPO sticker or the VIN-specific build sheet. Here's an example of a low mileage original '85 IROC >>

Helpful if you're looking at a 100% original car, but as he stated, the car has had a repaint, and has had the potential for other modifications, so what accessories it may have had new isn't of much help now. He needs other sources, like the RPO or the wheel tag on the door to help determine what the car originally was.

And speaking of bad information, care to show a pic of where your wheels say IROC-Z?

Jim, hmmm ... The car isn't stored at my house, so I can't just run out and check. But I could swear the center caps on my wheels are black and say IROC-Z in red letters.

Is that wrong? I don't mind being corrected - I'm a fan of accuracy!

Yeah, the centercaps do, but the wheel itself doesn't. I mis-understood.

But, since that wheel only came on IROCs anyway, whether or not it says it is a moot point. But, due to the popularity of that wheel style, just having that wheel on the car really doesn't offer any proof that the car is an IROC because it's very common for people to add them to their car.
