Why were the rear side markers on firebirds made different than the front?

That extra trim piece that surrounds the rear side marker...why is that there? Why couldn't they have made it like the front side marker?

Just a wild guess here, but they are structural panels so they couldn't just cut a hole in them like they did with the front fenders. If you notice the hole for them is recessed a little which would add some strength back into the panel for the missing hole. The holes in the front fender are just a bent edge as I recal, but since they aren't structural the twisting forces didn't affect them as much. That is just a WAG so take it as that.

makes sense to me

usually always around cut outs in panels theres a lip recess

to keep kinking form happening

same principle with most hoods and trunk decks too, most have the lines in them to help keep them from sagging and such,

but not all do, all dpeends on how they are designed

ask the engineers

good luck

I dunno, but it sucks. They coulda-shoulda overbuilt the front to match the back if it was for panel strength as mentioned above.

Why does it suck? The only thing that I can think of is that you want clear ones...

No way do I want clear sidemarkers. Just would like them to not have that extra trim piece. Its not the worst thing in the world, I just always wondered why.

Sorry, I didn't quote who I was replying to. I understood the "why" behind your question :-)

It sucks because they just always looked like a mismatched pair to me.
It looks like they were all supposed to have the trim ring, but you wrecked the car and put a newer/older front clip on it where the lights didn't have the trim ring. Or vice-versa.

Maybe two different guys designed the fender and quarter panel, and they didn't get together first.

This design must have passed over the big cheeses desk the same day as the vinyl spoilers.
