1986 IROC

Hey guys what engines were available on an 1986 IROC, im about to purchase this vehicle. The owner said that its the 5.0 305, I hope to hell its the 215hp one, not the 145 (I dont think they would put that in an IROC)

Sorry but the engine is probably not the 215 hp TPI version, If its the original motor. The 86 Iroc came with either a lame 155 horsepower carbureted LG4 or a 195 horsepower TPI motor. The 85 TPI motor came with an aggresive cam which made more power. A good hint is to look at the rpm tachometer on the guages. If it has a yellow line at 4,500 rpm's... its the lame 305 TPI motor. But if You see a yellow line at 5,000 rpm's and the redline is marked at 5,500 rpm's, You've got the better motor. But I definitely assume that You have the weaker motor with an 86 model.. But the smaller cammed motor makes more low end torque so it's kinda fun to drive. Lemme know what You find if You need more help...

My 85 IROC was originally equipped with a 155 LG4. Check this link for more info:

The '86 TPI engine wasn't rated at 215 like the '85 TPI engine. Apparently in 86, they used the weaker LG4 camshaft in the TPI which knocked about 20hp out of it. Only GM could perform that brilliance :-)
