86 IROC with 350

This is a response to sticky about whether or not there were 350s in any camaros before 87. The answer is yes. But there were only 1000 made. They were only available with 700r4 trans and no a/c.They were only in the IROCs.

They were also all prototypes and test mules, without VINs, and were all destroyed with none ever being sold to the public.

This needs to die already.

Only 1000 eh? Shouldnt be too hard to find one then, considering there were ~1500 TTA's and less than ~370 89 Firebird verts with a 350 (one of which is mine, and many of which are owned by people here).

Mind posting one up (a real one) as backup for that rediculous claim you're making?

This needs to die allready.... if you have an 86 IROC with a 350 lucky you. it is one of the following three things:
1. a 305. sorry.
add this to all the pre-87 factory GTAs, the pre-87 factory formulas, and the Trans AMs with 2.8L v6s. you got screwed, deal with it.

2. a swap. people do it all the time. lucky you.

3. a prototype or test mule without a VIN that somone risked their job to save from destruction. in which case it is not street legal and can not exist on the street, and is therefore of no use beyond car shows and magazine shoots.

if it does have a vin it is one of #1 or #2, or it is hard evidance that somone swapped/forged a VIN tag, and is thus fruade. you should probbably contact the state police.

GM also made front-wheel drive Camaros as test mules for the 3.4L DOHC V6 and 4T60 drivetrain. Why is it that nobody gets excited and claims they have one of those?

Or why leave it at F-bodies, how about 83 Corvettes? GM built them and then gave up production due to quality control and tooling issues, and destroyed them. How often does someone claim they have one of those? Or maybe the mid-70s Corvette mid-engined rotary prototypes?

Just because a car was built doesn't mean that it was ever produced.

Even if one of those cars survived today, without documentation to establish provenance, it doesn't "exist".

one of the members on this board once told me about his favorite april fools day joke of calling auto parts stores asking for year specific parts for an 83 corvette. "no it can't be from an 84, the 83s had a year specific (insert whatever it is here) and it does not interchange with 82 or 84!!!"

And with 4 posts, you can back up your statement how? Never have I heard anyone say there was 1000 of them. Nobody has been able to locate even 1 of them. All other documentation states only 50, but we now have 1000.

There is ONE 83 Vette that survives at the Corvette Museum in Bowling Green KY. It is a white prototype that was spared from the crusher by luck. Just like the 84 model in appearance. I have seen it several times, and it was sporting different wheels from one side to the other. One side had the wheels that saw production, while the other side had wheels that did not make the cut. Kinda resembled 82 Berlinetta wheels. Those wheels along with the 83 Vette exist, but were never sold to the public. This car is a pilot car with a vin and a known history, unlike the 86 350 IROC which has never been seen outside of captivity. No one has ever been able to document even one car as a survivor anywhere, much less in the public hands. Oldtimer.

oldtimer got it... PROTOTYPE, "PILOT CAR."

I have a copy of an article with a genuine 1986 350 powered IROC Z.. the article was written in JUNE of 1986 in Automobile AND APRIL 28 1986 in Autoweek... SO they DO exist, we have 2 expert testimonies that say so... THey WERE real cars (WERE) being the key here.

NOW that we have killed this. let us move on...

For our next topics of discussion we will discuss the 350 and 5 speed cars... After that we will discuss the Base firebird with a 350. or how about the rare 1989 LC2 Turbo Formula convertible...

With the winter 2006 HOT ROD archive series #5 pg 18 states ( Beat a mustang a 1000 times) mar 86 issue , hrm wrote that 1,000 86 and a half IROCs would have 350 corvette power, all without a/c and with 700R4 transmissions. Test car had a 3.27:1 rear axle and ran 14.43 @ 94.57mph. Thats straight out of the mag! Now with 5 posts, that's how I back it up!

Yes, the magazine printed that in anticipation that GM would actually ship a planned production run of 1,000 1986 L98 IROCs. Those plans were scrapped, production was cancelled for 1986, and the prototypes (including that test car) were eventually destroyed.

Not to stir the pot up more, but....

what about the planned 602 1992 camaro z-28's with the 350/ 6 speed transmission that were to be made as a tribute/ anniversary for the '67 Z/28.. depending on when you read that we might see people eventually "claim" to have one of those..

Supposedly 2 were built and at least one of them was scrapped. Not sure if GM kept the other one...

of course, I could have my facts wrong from reading the wrong articles myself

I Think some of you will have fun with this...

THIS is a legitimate REAL order that was placed on 03-17-1986 for a IROC-Z 350 car... there are 4 pages to this...

The first page is a description, it shows the available options and the options that are NOT available. It also shows that an approximate 1000 units were intended to be made. To my knowledge this is from a Chevrolet dealership.

The second page is the ACTUAL ORDER, as it was placed and it was acknowledged on 3-17-1986

The third page is a response to the dealership from Chevy as an INCOMPATIBLE, it was sent to the dealer on 4-23-1986.

The last page is a cancellation by DC, whoever that may be, District Chevrolet possibly. dated 5-13-1986.

No, because it has more lives then those 50 so called 1986 350 Camaros. Next person that starts another Post on this subject should be Banned. My opinion.
