91 Firebird??
91 Firebird??
We purchased a 1991 Firebird 305 tune port, 5-speed, conv. and the
wheels say WS6, the hood has the scoops in the front like a Trans Am
hood. My questions are, did they make a 91 WS6 and could this be one?
Also, how many of these 91 conv. did they make? Is there any certain
breakdown in the production number's?

In 91 you could either get a base model Firebird convertible, or a Trans Am. Since it's a TPI car, it's a Trans Am. WS6 was optional. Check the glovebox in the trunk for a SPID and look for WS6 in the list of codes. The published production numbers for Pontiacs get kinda screwy in the later years. You could get a lot of different numbers from different sources.
91 Firebird?
Thanks for that information. That helps a bunch. The car doesn't say Firebird or Trans Am but does have the Trans Am style hood. The title says Firebird, is this normal? You mentioned a glovebox in the trunk, I couldn't find anything like that. Could you be more specific please? What is a Spid? Sorry to be so ignorant about all of this but we are new to the Pontiac scene. Thanks again for all your help.

Its either on the inside of the compartment door in the rear hatch area Or its on the spare tire trim piece, I forget.
If the VIN is 1G2FW then its a Trans am, if its 1G2FS then its a Firebird that has been converted, the 8th diget should be an "F"

My 91RS convertible has it in the trunk. The position changed mid-year. Later cars have them in the trunk, early cars have them in the console.
92's don't have the glovebox in the trunk, unlike the earlier cars that used the standard plastic panels cut to fit. Instead they've got formed carpet trim. It's probably safe to assume that if it were a late 91 it might have gotten the 92 treatment.

Just so you know I have a Trans Am and the title says the same thing about it being a firebird. Same with the registration. I assume this was done either for insurance reasons(cheaper) or it was done because thats the model line. Because mine also says firebird on the title i would have to assume its normal for it to say that.

Now we know it's a 91 Trans Am
Thanks to all for your comments and the help and thank you okfoz for telling me how to decide if it was a Firebird or a Trans Am. I now know that it is a Trans Am. To user name Drew, let's assume for a moment that my car is a later part of the year. Could that sheet be underneath the carpet in the trunk in a plastic protector?
I am attaching a close up picture of the wheel. As I stated at the beginning of this post the center cap says WS6. Did these wheels come on the car or are they not the originals?
Any help on decoding the VIN number even more would be greatly appreciated.

Hmm, those look like the base model 15 inch Firebird wheels that someone just slapped WS6 center caps on. I would investigate the rest of this car a little closer...

Thanks navy02ws6 for the reply, when you say investigate a little further can you please explain?
I would love to know as much about this car as possible. I tried downloading the RPO Decoder last week and when I did it showed the program in my programs on my computer. However, I needed something else from Microsoft to make it work properly. So I removed that program yesterday and went and got what I needed but when I downloaded it again it's nothing like what installed last week. It wont let me put the whole VIN number in the decoder box.
I was helped from someone else on this board and I now know that this car is a Trans Am but I would like to know more.
Can you help?

The RPO decoder is only for RPO codes, which are only 3 spaces (a letter and 2 numbers or 2 letters and a number) for example, the gold version of those wheels you show are N90. The VIN decoder is a whole different thing and is located on this site. Basically the VIN should have certain numbers or letters in place to state which model/engine it has.

ShowNGo92 thanks for the reply. Would you happen to know the code for the wheel's that I have? Also, can you send me the link for the VIN decoder on here? Because I can not seem to find it.

I just thought that it's a little odd that someone would decide to trade the 16x8 crosslace GTA style wheels that would have come stock on a Trans Am for the smaller base model V6 Firebird wheels. I have seen a lot of fakes, and 91-92 T/A verts are fairly rare cars.

Technically the rim pictured is an N90, which is a 15X7 cross lace rim, some of which are painted for certain packages. Mine are painted gold from the factory. As for the VIN decoder, all you need to know is what okfoz said above, 1G2FW is a Trans Am and if it is 1G2FS it is a Firebird. The only other thing to be concerned with he also said, that is the 8th digit, which denotes the engine. If it is a TBI it is a base Bird, if it is TPI, it is probably a T/A. Hope this helps. I will say I have never seen any 91-92 with unpainted cross lace rims.

Well thanks to okfoz, my title does state 1G2FW. So I now know that I do have a Trans Am but I have forgot the site that told me how to check the 8th digit in the VIN. Do you know?

If the 8th digit is an F, the car has the 5.0 TPI, I think the 3.1 V6 would be a T, and I'm not sure what the 5.0 TBI was but I want to say E for some reason. If this were a hardtop, it could also have been optioned with the 5.7 TPI, which would have been an 8.

Someone changed the wheels.
Check the data sticker in the drives side door jam. It'll list the tire size. WS6 cars came with 245/50ZR16s, non-WS6 T/A would be 235/something or other.

Hi there and welcome to the site!
I suggust sending out some money to PHS, and get a copy of the invoice for the car.
It will tell you the important stuff like if the car has WS6 or not.
PHS advertises here on this site, I believe.
I also think it's right around 35 dollars.
This copy of the invoice is nice to have for your car.
As for a build sheet, check all around your car.
Under the driver's seat, under the carpet, behind the dash, in the trunk, above the gas tank, are just some of the places they are found.
Also, it may not even be in the car at all. Sad, but true.
The car looks very nice, and I hope you have tons of fun with it.
Not sure where you are located, but start checking around your area for car shows. Pontiac car shows have people who can answer most questions right there. Plus, it's always nice to hang out with people who have the same type car as you.
The main thing is to have fun with your new toy!
Enjoy,
George

Mr. TurboTA, thank you for all of your help but may I ask you one more question please. Can you tell me where I can find this PHS site? What is it exactly? I am a little illiterate when it comes to Pontiac's. I have drove a Ford for the past 10 year's. A 1988 Mustang GT, which I still have but the convertible is a little more fun right now.
