89 Formula - Mandrel bends?

Did the stock exhaust on a 5.0 TBI have mandrel bends at the rear tailpipes that come out? If anyone can verify please let me know.

The stock pipes aren't crush bent if that's what you're asking. They aren't quite aftermarket mandrel perfect, but pretty close.

Both of these systems are OEM, the one on the left is 1986, the right is 1991.

Re: 89 Formula - Mandrel bends?

There were part numbers stamped in the pipes and muffler. But since the picture is three years old, and the rusted system went in the garbage, and the other was on the car when I sold it, I can't help you. Walker/Dynomax sells what is pretty much an exact replacement. Any decent parts stores should be able to get Walker exhaust parts. For genuine GM the best buy is still going to be your local GM dealership, assuming they can still get the original equipment.

I believe the Muffler would probably still be available since they used it on 4th gens too, At least they are similar enough that the 4th gen muffler will work. I had one on my 87 for a while with the Formula/Trans Am tips.

Re: 89 Formula - Mandrel bends?

What I am trying to do is keep my Firebird as original as possible. Any work done on my car will be done with an original GM part (from the era) for as long as I can.

The muffler from my 91 Formula, and the muffler from 96'ish T/A were the same.

Yeah, all the stamped markings and part number were identical.

Re: 89 Formula - Mandrel bends?

Talk to Kevin aka Gearhead on our board.

He has my original 91 GTA exhaust under his car now. It was almost perfect shape.

Would be a good close one for u too see.

Re: 89 Formula - Mandrel bends?

If you have a 1989 + car keep in mind that the SLP Exhaust on TPI cars would also be proper as it was an over the counter dealer installed part. So at some shows like the Trans Am nationals it would still be considered "Stock"... THat would also include the larger SLP Runners & Headers...

Other shows they may deduct you, but since it was offered by a dealer I am not sure how they could...
