JUST CURIOUS.....
JUST CURIOUS.....
Was just wondering 'bout my 82 Z28. Did all z's this year come w/cross-fire injection(the intakes that look like the cross-rams off the DZ motors)????

Re: JUST CURIOUS.....
As AmorgetRS stated you could get the LG4 305.Actually this was the standard motor(roughly 47,000)in the Z28 with the LU5 305 CFI being the only option(24,760 cars).I guess because the Indy Pacecar replicas(6,360 cars but doesn't break down LG4 - LU5) are most often seen with the CFI motors some people may think it was the Z28's only motor for '82.

Stock they are underpowered yes, but you have to think of the time is was made with all the restrictions on emissions. Plus being on the small 305 engine, and the restrictive intake. If you want horsepower gains, get the after market "X-Ram" which is basically just a better flowing Weiand intake with a CFI top plate. Technically it's not a "Crossfire" any more, but someone just taking a glance at it wont even know the difference. Also, boring out the throttle bodies to about 2" will also increase flow. You also have to upgrade the computer and tune it for the throttle bodies. I've been wanting to do this to my 406 for a while now, but haven't been able to find a CFI system.
You would think that all the people throwing these away in favor of a carb setup, I'd have an easy time getting a hold of one...

Re: JUST CURIOUS.....
1982TA hits the main points on why the LU5(and the Corvette's L83)make less power compared to the later TPI motors. The CFI's lower intake has very restrictive ports and the exhaust manifolds are the same as those found on the LG4.If you look at the cam specs for the LU5 they are very close to the L69's.The big difference between the 2 motors is the LU5's restrictive exhaust.Change the exhaust manifolds to L69,TPI(they are basically the same)for stock appearance or HO/TPI headers for even better flow.Along with this a hiflo cat(again HO/TPI)and catback.Along with this porting the intake and TBI's you'll have a very nice package.
The main thing people have problems with is getting the TBI's in synch(same as with multiple carbs). This makes CFI motors somewhat more difficult to work on.And the fact they HATE any vacuum leaks.
