82+ body side molding question...help!
Ok, my '82 TA has the body side molding on the door and front fender and rear quarter panels, as most of these cars do. Now this molding consists of a metal strip that uses an adheasive, and is riveted on. And a rubber strip that pushes into the metal strip. The metal piece is silver on my car, and is probably this color on many cars, and have seen this type of molding up to at least '85.
My question is, when getting a replacement, do they still have the metal strips? My front fender was damaged at some point, and the molding is completely black, but is the exact same style as the other molding. I'd like to replace all my molding anyway, but want the original silver metal strip. I was searching ebay and found this:http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...140467625&rd=1
this molding looks completely black, just like my front fender molding. Also, the part number is 20509364. In fact, if you goto gmpartsdirect and put in the number it says it is available. Now in my parts manual for '82 it shows a number of 20357310 and is not available from gmpartsdirect saying it's discontinued. Another question I have, are these numbers just for the rubber molding strip and not the silver metal "bracket" if you will, or was it considered one piece with the strip and rubber molding?? I'm confused!! I was able to find some NOS pieces with the '82 number, however I cannot actually look at them, but found a place that has them. I just want to make sure it has the silver strip also, and not black.
If anyone can help I'd appreciate it!! This is driving me nuts! Here is a pic of my '82 with the trim I'm talking about. Also, an '85 with the same thing

Pretty sure they were all black and only held on with double sided tape... no rivets...
Also pretty sure that some time mid model year 1983 the texture of the "body armor" changed from a course texture to a more smooth look.
IMO just remove it all... These cars look better without that molding

mine were riveted on as well ... however mine like his showed wear and pitting so I replaced mine with aftermarket ones. Too me silver door moulding just looks out of place on a black and gold car ...... I say get all black ones for your car or delete them.

Thanks...
I guess I'll have to keep looking, or goto the junkyard. I want to keep them silver because that is what came on my car. Like I said, I've seen the silver on other years including the '85 I showed in the pic. I don't want to go with black because it's not correct, and I'm trying to keep everything as factory as possible. I know it might seem like a small oversight but I guess I'm just picky about it.
I'm not going to remove them either so that is out of the question. I guess this is just another one of the many inconsistancies with GM and these cars with same models having slight variations on options.

Re: 82+ body side molding question...help!
Those riveted moldings are aftermarket. Some dealers had them installed on the lot, and others sent the cars out to trim shops. From what I have seen they are silver because the black paint has burned away. If you flip them around they are usually black on the other side.
The only stock moldings for the early cars are the thin kind (which I have seen in both black and body color):

The later cars have the thick kind (which were body color):

Both types stick on. No stock molding was riveted on.

Re: 82+ body side molding question...help!
On my '83 Z28 she has the 2 piece aluminum channel/rubber insert. The channel is riveted on and is silver in color. But every picture I've seen of '82-'84 camaros the bodyside molding is black.I'm debating at this point of having the exsisting molding powder coated black. The missing parts, passenger door-rear quarter, I found off a '84 the channel is black. And my door edge gaurds are black also.
As mentioned a lot of these items were dealer installed, even trailer hitches. which my '83 has.The '83 dealer book Camaro section lists the dealer installed options.

Re: 82+ body side molding question...help!
so is there any way to get these still?? Is there a part number for these or what? I'll have to check my parts book, but I thought there was a "dealer" section with add on's. Someone also told me they were a dealer installed option but didn't really believe him. thanks for the input guys...
Also, can someone post a photo of what the trim should look like FACTORY? I'm just curious to see it.
Thanks

Re: 82+ body side molding question...help!
In the '82-'88 Chevrolet F -Body Parts Catalog the P/N for the '82 side moldings are;
Front fender center P/N 20509364
Front door center P/N 20508803
Rear fender center P/N 20509364
For '82 these are these are the only P/N listed for center moldings. But for '83 there are 2 different P/N listed for center moldings. The notes are for smooth(same P/N as '82)or deep grain styles. For '83 it also noted for adhesive molding usage refer to chart at end of Group 8.000(haven't found the chart yet).
They were both factory options and dealer installed add-ons.I hope this helps and not confuses(reading parts books is like looking thru goverment regs).I'm still looking because I need to remove the driver's side on mine and paint,or have them powder coated, black(GM Parts Direct still have the '83 moldings available so i may replace them). And also install the passenger side.

Re: 82+ body side molding question...help!
In my '82-'83 book it lists them as:
Front/Back: 20357310
Door: 20344430
Like I said, put these numbers in gmpartsdirect.com and they are discontinued. However I found a dealer that has these part numbers NOS. They are 2 different part numbers...I don't know if they are different moldings or what. This is where the confusion sets in. If you put the other part number is listed in the previous post, gmpartsdirect has these. Also it's the same one that is on Ebay right now...doesn't make sense

Re: 82+ body side molding question...help!
I have an 82 Camaro, which I bought new from a dealer. However I did not order it. It does have RPO code B93 on the build sheet, DR/EG GRD BLK. I don't know if this code is for the door edge guard only or includes the black bumper strip along the door and quater panels. Per the 1982 Sales Brochure book I have it these were options only available in BLACK for Camaros. There is an 82 Firebird Sales Brochure on the home page here at TGO but the print on the options page is to small to read
.
In the body section of the 82 Camaro Shop manual, it only talks about repairing adhesive attached door guards. Nothing about rivet attached items.
So I would have to agree that anyting rivet attacched was after market. It is not clear it the dealer attached the horizontal door guards on my car, because I no longer have the window sticker. I think they are factory, but then again I have not found a defitive RPO code for them either (unless they are included in the code above)

Re: 82+ body side molding question...help!
Dave there is the same reference to repairing adhesive moldings in the '83 Camaro shop manual. But the parts catalog adds the footnote that adhesive center moldings were in a separate chart(which I still haven't found).
Also there are 2 separate RPO's for the center molding(B84)and for the door edge guards/moldings(B93)according to the '82-'88 parts catalog(also listed in the "Camaro Whitebook").And you're right about black being the only color listed.
And Jproz there is a RPO-BX5 roof drip molding but I would imagine this was for hardtops only.
In the pictures you posted of the center molding is it one piece or 2 piece(aluminum channel with rubber center)?

Re: 82+ body side molding question...help!
And the door edge and the center moldings were separate options.
When I ordered mine I passed on all the body armor. My dealer told me that most "custom" orders were done this way since these bits were easy to add later and the cost was the same. Sometime midway through model year 1983 the molding changed... Slightly... went from a "coarse" leather texture to a "smooth" leather texture.. Though the physical dimensions were the same... and to really confuse every one they had the same part numbers... After several parking lot issues I added factory armor to my car. When I got them from the dealer 1/2 were smooth and 1/2 were coarse. Nice... After some research I found that "coarse" was correct for my 83... But the dealer could only get "smooth"

I finally found the referenced chart mentioned in the parts catalog(8.132-GROUP)for adhesive moldins. It gives these P/N - Front Fender 20357310,Front Door 20508803 and Rear Quarter 20257310.These are for '82-'83 only and are different than the P/N in the other parts list.Same color code as the other 19Q(Black).1982TA those numbers are the same as the ones you have.
It does list the later color codes and P/N up to '88 for the center moldings.

Re: 82+ body side molding question...help!
Does anyone know a good way to remove the adhesive on my door? My molding has fell off on both my driver and passenger side. Not sure if i want to reapply or not but either way I know I need to remove the adhesive that looks like crap on my car
