How do I verify that my car is a 1983 25th Anniversary Daytona 500 edition and not a clone?

 

Post the info from the tag next to the hood release on the upper radiator support.

The person that did your appraisal should have been able to tell, but that is if they knew what they were doing (a rarity in today's world).

 

Look for the Y82 RPO on the build plate on the radiator support.

There are also several DT500 specific items to look for. But the Y82 should be the easiest way to tell if it is real.

 

Actually, it would be Y82, same as the 83 Mecham Edition.

It would also need to have 604. Not to mention the tag matching VIN.

 

Whoops... Your right, its Y82. Also look for AQ9 to indicate the Recaro seats.

 

what is the 604? ill have check it when it is out of the shop its going to be there for a week or two, all the parts for it are special order only which equals one week for the parts to arrive. another to intall them.

 

The "604" is the interior trim code unique only on the '83 Daytona Trans Am.

You would also have the unique exterior color codes 11L 11U 82M

Yes it would have the AQ9, even though for '83 AQ9 designates the Recaro and Lear Siegler seats.

That is correct. Meant Mecham Edition instead of Recaro. Post corrected.

No documentation on the build sequence numbers has come to light in my limited knowledge of these cars..................

Not to hijack this thread but just had the 82 MSE at the TA Nats and after a lengthy discussion at the tech line, the car was put in the modified class (it was repainted to orig, the git kit is unistalled)because I was told the MSE had NO RPO code, so its considered one mod. I cant speak for an 83 Mecham but if anyone can comment on this (start a new thread) I would appreciate the input.

The car does have a locked engine. So I'm not sure what I'm going to do until I pull it apart. I paid 850 for the car.
