Quartz clock

I posted some pics of my 83 Z28 on the Members Rides board and was asked
if these were available on the IrocZ cars.
I have literature from 83 but nothing for later models.
Anyone here know what all cars where these available on?

RPO U35, available from 82 through 85. I have one in my 85 IROC (according to the white book there were only 809 of them in 85). The general consensus is that they were equipped on cars with AM radio since it had no digital clock, which is the case with my car--whether that idea is true or not, I'm unsure.

Re: Quartz clock

Yeah, the '85 IrocZ would be the only IrocZ's able to get that clock, as '85 was the first year for the IrocZ and last year for the quartz clock.
In '82 the option cost was $32.00 and installed in 14,166 Camaros.
In '83 it was $39.00 in 1,992 rides.
In '84 it was $35.00 in 1,840 rides.
And in '85 it was also $35.00 in only (as JamesC mentioned) 809 rides.

I also heard that with the invent of the digital clock radio being included in the stock headunit's made this option redundant and there was no longer a point to spend another ~$35.00 on it.

They are becoming increasingly difficult to find without scratches to the lens and in working condition.

Re: Quartz clock

I remember my friends '85 Camaro had it. It was a "plain jane" V6/5spd Camaro with not many options. It's been so long ago, but I remember it was white with a burnt orange colored interior.

Re: Quartz clock

WOW!!! Thanks for the great info guys. Thats why I love this board.

Honestly I didn't even know about this option untill after I found my car.
Mine does have many scratches, not large/deep ones, but many of them are present. I considered sanding and polish like many have done here for parking light lenses and such but given the few of these that are left I would rather leave it to a pro. Any suggestions for these scratches? I'll try and get a good picture of it soon.

I love the console clock option.I think its a really cool addition to the interior of a 3rd gen camaro.I installed clocks in my 86 Iroc and my 89 Iroc Vert.I cant tell you how many people look at it and tell me they have never seen anything like that before.Makes me feel kinda special...lol.Currently have about 8 of them all in working condition

For light scuffs you could try http://www.meguiars.com/?clear-plast...Cleaner-Polish.

Re: Quartz clock

For removing haze, scuffs and scratches I use plastic polish with the polishing cloth on my dremel.Seems to work pretty good

Re: Quartz clock

They do show up every once in a while in the junkyards.Twice Ive found 2 of them on a given junkyard trip. The first time I ever saw one was about 5 years ago in a 1982 Z28.I didnt even notice the clock cause the console was covered in dirt concealing it.I must have run my hand over it and exposed part of the clock cause I was like Holy s**t what is that.I ended up selling that one and maybe about 2 more throughout the years.Nowadays when I find one I test it to make sure it works and then put it in a box with the rest of them.If you do find one make sure you also take the console top and the wire pigtail

Re: Quartz clock

And for goodness sake, don't even think about touching the hands of the clock if you do take the cover off. There's probably nothing on this earth as brittle as those things.

Re: Quartz clock

I pulled one out of an 82 berlinetta and after about 5 minutes of testing the second hand completely broke off. That car looked like it was in the junkyard for many many years.I have a couple of clocks that I use for parts and Ive actually swapped the second hands onto good working ones. They come off pretty easy but its usually only the second hand that gets brittle.I guess because its so thin as compared to the other 2 hands.

Re: Quartz clock

Thanks for the info guys. After much consideration I'm just going to leave it alone. After all this is a Surviver car not a restoration.

By the way, for those that have not seen this option before, today was the first time I drove it at night and the clock is lit up just like the speedo on the instrument panel and it the light dimms just the same. I thougt it was pretty cool. Of course I didn't think to take a picture of it. Sorry, should have one pretty soon.

Re: Quartz clock

Yeah that is pretty cool. Its hooked up to the dimmer switch(grey wire) so it lights and dims exactly like the instrument panel

There's a little slot for it if you have the overhead console.

Re: Quartz clock

Negative on the overhead console. My car started life as a hardtop and then later converted to a t-tops car. Do you guys know if the console would have been removed during this process or is it possible it just wasn't equiped with one from factory?

Re: Quartz clock

I have 2 extra clocks that are currently being restored along with mine that lately seems to be losing time. When I get the repair bill I may post them for sale or be looking for something to trade for. Whenever people check out my car they always mention the clock. Didnot know it was so rare in the 85's.

Re: Quartz clock

Mine failed to run when I first purchased the car. I was prepared to send it in, but in advance of that, I blew it out with canned air, doused the works with WD-40, and manipulated the hands a few times, and long story short, after a half dozen years or so, the old boy still keep accurate time. By the way, high-intensity 194 bulbs will make it (as well as the rest of the cluster and HVAC control head) much brighter. You can see mine below (though not clearly) in my Car Details.

Most of the time the culprit is the second hand. It gets caught on the "little" hand. Most of the time it powers through but after a few days you'll be behind.

Overhead consoles were only available as an factory option from 1984-87.Since your car is an 83 it didnt come with one

Re: Quartz clock

On increasing the intensity/brightness of the clocks light you can ,line the interior of the housinf with aluminum tape - I used the typed for repairing roofing seems.

On the overhead console my late build '83 (June 3rd week) seems to be an enigma as she had 3 or of mounting studs but missing the fourth (the stid holes appear to be punched and not drilled). And the relief hole for the map light is also stamped out and not holesawed.the overhead console have been a late '83 addition (I've asked before)? Also the headliner appeared to be factory cut for it.

Then I'd also like to mention that your interior looks pretty nice too! Most of the "CAMARO" interiors I've seen are in bold colours and this is one of the few I've seen in grey. Looks pretty sharp.

I agree, those seats look great. The only ones I see all the time in the camaro camaro camaro theme are the red ones. I've had light grey interiors before and have it in my Tahoe now and I know its not easy to keep them clean. Just dust off the steering wheel and colum tho. J/K

WOW! 26 replies on the quartz clock, cool.
