1988 gta with Lb9
Hello I just bought a 88 GTA with the LB9 305 HO 700r4 with the digital dash. How many LB9 were made> I just don't see why you would want the LB9 unless you wanted the 5 speed. Thanks. Bryan

Extra cost of $700-800 I believe swayed alot of minds I'm sure. That's 1986 dollars too.For street driving ~30 hp and some extra torque...hmm, I might of been cheap too

But didn't the GTAs come with the 350 as a Standard option and then some people would choose the 305 instead so that they could receive that $700-800 in options credit? Thats what I thought but I could be wrong...

Hi a mack6
You are correct. From the GTA SourcePage, there was a credit for going to the LB9 vs L98 as well as from the automatic to standard transmission. Total came to about $700 - 800 in credit dollars.
What I find interesting is that the LB9/auto combo has less rated hp that the LB9/standard. I believe the LB9 with the standard transmission got the L98 cam but I'm not sure about the LB9/auto.

My friend had an 88 GTA LB9 5 speed. It was a nice car but in the span of 2 years, it went from a nice driver to a stripped chassis.
I ended up getting the T5, wheels, hood, and badges.

I'll save you some time. Here's the total breakdown for US cars that year....
'88 GTA with 5.7L/AOD - 6,913
'88 GTA with 5.0L/AOD - 2,043
'88 GTA with 5.0L/M5 - 809
The LB9 engine, regardless of transmission, was the only way to get T-tops in a GTA that year.... I'd wager that was the reason for so many being produced.

Often you'll see this related decal . . .

Regarding the LB9 cams. They did use two different grind profiles, with the slightly more aggresive profile typically accompanied by the 5 spd tranny.
