Restoring 82 TA - Need Outer Trim Part #'s

I am looking for the part number (or numbers, since there are three pieces) for 1982 exterior door trim...the three piece design on each side that runs along the middle of the door. I am looking for a specific type of 82 trim that I believe was offered as an option. Here's a pic:

I am NOT looking for the part numbers for the more common trim that looks like this:

Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks,
Joe

Re: Restoring 82 TA - Need Outer Trim Part #'s

i have that same sh1ty a$$ door trim on my 84 t/a. it was not a rpo option,it was a dealer installed option. u will not be able to find replacement pieces. i am just goin to have mine filled in when i get the paint done. imo it looks much better and it will not hurt the value if u don't replace it b/c like i said i don't think there was a rpo # for it. i could be mistaken, but i am 99% sure.

I think they called it "body side molding", if that helps. I don't have any part numbers handy.

The black car has aftermarket dealer installed molding. You could probably find something close if not exactly the same from a body shop supply store.

The white car has the correct factory installed RPO B84 Body Side Molding option. This is what you should be looking for if you are doing a restoration. I know a few pieces of the early style molding('82-87) were still available from GM about eight years ago but I imagine they are long since been discontinued by now.

Re: Restoring 82 TA - Need Outer Trim Part #'s

I'm looking for the exact same pieces...well, the front drivers side fender piece anyway. My '82 has the same molding, except the front drivers side is all black instead of the silver trim with black rubber molding. It's also just held in place with an adhesive backing. The metal pieces are actually riveted to the door so keep this in mind if you remove them. The endcaps I believe can just slide off, and the rubber piece slides in along a channel in the metal part. Not sure if you already knew this or not, but it's something I wasn't aware of at first.

I'd keep them. They were part of the car weather factory or dealer installed. If you replace them with "factory" molding it would most likely be incorrect since you wouldn't have the RPO to reflect them. The parts manual also lists more than one part number for the same trim pieces, and I cannot find anyone who can clarify the differences.

Best bet would probably be to look in a junk yard or just ask in the classifieds. TONS of these cars had that molding and even beyond '84. I've seen the same molding on at least up to '86-'87.

Re: Restoring 82 TA - Need Outer Trim Part #'s

The only problem is, at least for me anyway, is that nobody can tell me what part number goes to which molding. My parts book doesn't differentiate the different moldings, it only gives different parts numbers to the generic illustration break down. so untill someone can post a visual of an actual piece with the part number it will be difficult. And when you are calling people on the phone with part numbers and you ask them to take a look at it to verify, it doesn't always pan out. Usually due to communication or they are too busy to find the part, look at it, and hope it's the same as you describe.

as for the above link...I went through a very large list of part numbers for my '82 and maybe a few actually came up. Unfortunately some parts are just getting harder and harder to find NOS.

Re: Restoring 82 TA - Need Outer Trim Part #'s

what firebird84ta is looking for is not factory. it is a dealer installed item and the part #is prolly long gone. so if u (FB84TA) can't find it and its not real important, then u would not be in the wrong for not putting it back on. like was said b4 u prolly don't have the rpo # for it. but i agree that if u were to install the factory replacement pieces, that would be wrong b/c it doesn't call for it.

i was goin to remove mine til i saw that they were riveted on. so when i get her painted i will take them off and have the holes filled in. i'am glad that i don't have the fact side molding i think it totally goes against the body lines, but the do protect it. even when i park out in no-mans land at shopping centers there's always some a$$hole that parks next to me. but i hate the moldings to much to leave them on. jmo.

Re: Restoring 82 TA - Need Outer Trim Part #'s

I need to find my order form but I think that was a factory installed option. It was part of a package.(At least the ones that were rivited on were). I have those pictured above on my 83 too.

Re: Restoring 82 TA - Need Outer Trim Part #'s

My build sheet lists RPO YT1 refers to custom door and quarter buildup. I don't know what this means, but does it have to do with the trim?

Re: Restoring 82 TA - Need Outer Trim Part #'s

Factory installed body side molding is RPO B84.

RPO YT1 is part of the custom interior group which got you the nicer seats and door panels.

Re: Restoring 82 TA - Need Outer Trim Part #'s

that makes sense. i have the yt1 code but i do not have the b84 code. so was i right about it being a dealer installed option and not a rpo opt??
