I have seen these before but I don't remember what year formulas had them.

Re: What wheels are these?

Those first came on the 84 15th anniversary TA. They were available on 85-87 TA's and I think just 87 Formulas. I think they were gone by 88.

They were used on the '84 15th Anniversary Trans Am(painted white), '85-87 Trans Am with WS6 suspension option(painted gold or natural) and '87 Formula(natural).

You happen to know where I can find one centercap for these?
I've checked Modern day muscle and ebay with no luck.
If anyone else reads this and has any idea please let me know.

Those center caps, new, haven't been available for many years now, so you'll only find them in classified ads and from places that sell used parts--like junkyards(probably the best places, maybe the only places). They're not impossible to come across, but they're definitely not easy to find either. So if you find some, any(even gold ones), I'd suggest you grab them all.

The wheels were offered on all the years and models mentioned in the above posts, but on the Formula, they were available for one year only, the first year, 1987.

See if a set of IROC center caps would fit, and if they do, these should fit as well.

I think I actually have a couple old Iroc centers from my old 87(geez I miss her)!
anyway,I'll try one out if I can find them!LOL! I sold that car 4 years ago.
No telling where I stuck the extra caps.If they fit then I'll go with a set of those you posted above. If not,I'll try my luck with a j/y or fabricate something on my own. After all, theres nothing special about them.
Just a 2"piece of machined alum. should do the trick,if that is the size of the opening on these wheels.

Re: What wheels are these?

The diameter of the face of the cap is 2 1/2", and the diameter of its lower plastic structure that snaps into the wheel hub opening is just over 2 3/8".

But didn't you say you only need one? So you apparently have three, which means you can use one of them as a template, if you try to have some made.

If you go junkyarding, plan to hit several yards, if there are multiple yards available to you. And don't get discouraged if you don't find any right away. It might take many visits to many yards over many months. So be patient.

Oh, and to answer one of your questions that nobody answered yet: yes, the inserts were painted a charcoal color in the clearcoated, natural-finish, machined wheels.

Re: What wheels are these?

I KNOW I will get stoned for this...

Like stated above...
The 1984 Anniversary Ed T/A
They were the WS6 Wheels on the Trans am from 1985 - 1987
They were the standard (and only) wheel on the formula in 1987...

SOME not many, In 1988 EARLY EARLY Formulas may have gotten them, I have seen a couple 88 cars that had them, and they were all early 1988 Formulas... The parts & Illustration catalog also has them listed for 1988...

John

Thanks, yes I only need one.I picked the wheels up on Sunday(same day i posted this thread)when I looked at the wheels the caps were all there.
I bought them on the spot and hauled them to my truck so,I guess one of them had some broken tabs on the back that would cause it to just go missing.Fell off on the way to the truck?Only answer IMO cuz theres no centercap in the bed of my truck.
and yes LA,I did figure out the painted/natural thing.thanks!
I'll make a complete set using tinfoil and beercaps before I spend $275!!

You won't get stoned from me!
Does the parts & illustration catalog show the same size opening for the centercaps as the iroc wheels?(ask Scott Moyer)he probably dreams these numbers! He could probably read off the exact dimensions in his sleep!LOL!
just joking Scott!
I believe the early 88 theory you posted.
In late 87 they probably had a few lots of the production 87 wheels and found an easy way to get rid of them instead of scrapping them.

Re: What wheels are these?

The 14" and 15" versions of this wheel used on other Pontiacs have smaller hub openings than the 16" version used on Firebirds, so you can't use centercaps from those for measurements.

I don't know how far away from you the seller is, but given how hard-to-find the centercaps are, have you tried calling him to see if he would look for the cap? You might even drive back to look for it yourself... if you haven't already done those things.

The dimensions I gave you above are from one I have sitting right here at my fingertips. It's one I'm hanging onto for my own "just in case" moment, otherwise...

And, John, based on parts' data I've seen, this wheel continuted to be used on WS6 TAs through 1989. The GTA wheel was optional for the TA, but this was still its standard WS6 wheel. So that might also explain why it's listed in parts illustrations catalogs after 1987.

Well thanks for the tease LA!LOL!What you gonna do if ya lose 2?
I say you just take one for the team and send me that spare in your fingertips.Just kidding.
I popped one of my three out tonight and theres no way the iroc ones would work.
And LA,I have no clue where the seller of these wheels lives.
I picked them up at a central fl. swapmeet that is held first sunday every month at a county fairgrounds. The main field is the parking lot for the shows. So,if the cap hasn't been ran over 100 times since sunday, chances are that some 5 year old kid has it stuffed in his pocket with his favorite hotwheels car!LOL! and the fairgrounds is about 50 miles from my house.
So theres no hope in finding that one IMO.
Turkey run at Daytona is coming soon so I'll try my luck there and the classifieds here. Thanks again,Tim

I have never seen the wheels on anything after 1988.... It does not mean that they do not exist, I just have not seen it.

However I have seen 1988 T/A's with the WS6 that got the Dished style Formula wheel... The guy was the original owner but IIRC the SPID sheet called out the Black cross laced style wheel. I suspect that there may have been a brief shortage, or there was an option, I have not delved that deep into it yet to get any substantial conclusions. I SUSPECT that there may have been brief shortages and instead of stopping the line they simply swapped wheels at the factory to keep things going, as that was more common than some of us want to accept.
