Glue Used on 1992 Only F Bodies?

I remember reading somewhere that 1992 F bodies were assembled with glue that was not used on earlier F bodies. GM used the glue on the 1992 models to see how it worked before using it on the redesigned 1993 F bodies. It was said to help make the bodies stronger and more rigid.

Was the glue used on the 1992 F bodies or was I misinformed?

I heard it was used because the stamps were old and beyond their lifetime. It actually made the cars better than previous years as far as rigidity.

1991 and 1992 had glue in the body. made them a little quieter as they still would flex a bit but not near as much as previous years.

So it is true that glue was used when they put the cars together? It was first used on the 1991 cars and not the 1992 cars?

I think the correct word is "adhesive". It could have started in late 91....not sure on that, but I know all 92's had adhesive applied to the panel joints.

Re: Glue Used on 1992 Only F Bodies?

Actually I think ALL of the F-bodies had some sort of Adhesive applied in some places. When New 3rd Gens could not have been all that bad for squeaks & rattles, as they would not sold many, I imagine the cars would have been pretty tight, but as they age they started making creeks & Squeaks.

My 1987 has adhesive everywhere in the car, The only thing I can think of is they improved the adhesive for 1992. I suspect they may have added the adhesive in places that they did not do before which would have helped them last longer.

Now that I think about it... Acid dipping a 3rd gen may be a BAD Ideal!... All of that adhesive goes away...

Re: Glue Used on 1992 Only F Bodies?

Dont get the Adhesive confused with seam sealer or body caulk. big difference.
The adhesive went between the panels before they were welded.
Its mostly in places you wouldnt see. Its used on most new truck bedsides and things like that. It really is remarkable stuff, strong as a spot weld!
the other stuff was applied over the joints after welding to keep water and air out..
Or soo I have been told..

Re: Glue Used on 1992 Only F Bodies?

Thats correct. The stuff used on the 91-92 was a structural adhesive that added strength to the connection between body panels. The seam sealer is an entirely different material that has no usefulness as a structural element, its to seal the joint to prevent fluid transfer (air, water) and prevent corrosion. Seam sealer has been used for longer than most of us have been alive if not longer than that, the structural adhesive is probably something that drifted over from the aircraft industry.

OK, I may stand corrected, I always assumed that the seam sealer was also an adhesive to some degree...

I wonder if you could add some of the adhesive with a syringe or something similar to cars, or earlier cars that did not have it...

Okfoz,

I would like to know the answer to that question too! I am still interested in the 1988 IROC that I looked at a few days ago.

Re: Glue Used on 1992 Only F Bodies?

One of the things that just struk me about the 1992's

I have never heard anything to the contrary, and I know of several reports of the 1992 driving and being stiffer feeling... I would REALLY like to know where they put this glue...

Personally, I would be interested in taking a car and put Glue where they did in the 1992's and see if there was indeed an improvement. I think that would make a GREAT tech article.
