87-90 GTA questions

So I've been promised a Trans Am GTA from an impound lot if the owner doesn't bother paying the fees and taking it (looks good in my favour so far). I only saw it once and stupidly didn't bother to write down the VIN. It is the 87-90 body style, automatic, t-tops. It is also a Canadian car. Any idea what components it is most likely to have?

Re: 87-90 GTA questions

Well since you mentioned that is was an AT that doesn't rule out a 350. Also since you said it is a GTA you should be able to safely rule out a 5.0 TBI or 5.0Carb. That is all under the assumption that it is a real GTA. If and when you get the car look for a Y84 rpo code to confirm that it is a GTA. I think that t-tops and 5.7 aren't an overly popular combo. Some of the other guys can correct me but I believe if it was an 87 GTA you had to take the 5.0 TPI to get T-Top. Okfoz (moderator) or http://www.gtasourcepage.com/ have forgot way more than I know about GTA's as far as production information goes. What color was it. Just curious I have a black 87

From what I've read, the t-tops and 350 was pretty rare in the US but was more common in vehicles exported (which I'm hoping covers Canada). It also does not have a digital instrument cluster. Color is maroon, and the GTA badges all appeared to be in the usual spots. I can't get in the car but next time I'm there I'll write down the VIN for further checking.

If I recall correctly you could not get a GTA or a TA with the 350 and T-tops in the US. However, you could do so in Canada. So you might get lucky.

Re: 87-90 GTA questions

Check out www.gtasourcepage.com for more info on the GTAs. I would go out on a limb and say that there were more t-top 350 cars than not. I have 2 GTAs, both with 350s (B2L, L98), dual cats (N10) and t-tops (CC1). One has cloth and the other has leather. Most of the GTAs that I have seen have T-tops and 350s until 1990, when supposedly, you couldn't get the 350 with t-tops, but there are exceptions (Formula).

The VIN won't verify the Y84 code to determine its a GTA or not.

Only the SPID sheet with the RPO codes will give you the Y84 code. Without that "its just a TA".

Yeah, problem is the car is a police impound and I'm betting the owner still has the keys
