Hey, my 84 Z28 came to me from the previous owner with a factory Delco casette player in a box (looks mints) and with mid 90's sony cd player installed. I hate aftermarket stereos, but I like CD's. I read somewhere that some of the latest third gens, post 1990 I think, came with factory Delco CD players that look just like the casette versions.

1) are these hard to find? can they be bought still from GM?

2) how much $$ would I have to shell out for one? I'd like a new, or atelast like new one.

Any info would be great!

Mostly any delco cd player from 1990-2002 should fit.3rd gen specific cd players can get a bit pricy.Mine came out of an early-mid 90`s buick.I have these in both of my Irocs,Looks perfectly stock

 

Nearly impossible to find at a reasonable price. JY's were my best bet at one point, but the guys are now pulling all the good equiptment while they take out whatever it is they have to remove before thay can put it in salvage

 

Had one in my 88 Iroc... not sure if it was factory or not but it -was- the correct 3rd gen model.

The CD player never worked on it... ended up pulling it and selling it for $20 or so on ebay.

 

Was the Delco cd player in our third gen camaros and firebirds used in any other cars in those years? I don't want the goofy 4th gen cd player, it woudln't match anything. I just want it to look like it could be factory, even if it has to be a Delco unit from another late 80's early 90's gm car.

 

I think mine looks like it came from the factory with that cd player.Nothing goofy about it at all.Illumination is the correct color and matches the dash perfectly.Ive seen similar camaro units used in other gm vehicles such as oldsmobile,gmc,cadillac and chevys.They look the same but have white lettering as opposed to the 90-92 yellow print.The firebird cd players also came in grand prixs and possibly grand ams and bonnevilles.Check out ebay as they show up from time to time.Camaro units should look similar to this one

 

BTW if your interested I have a few extras of those cd units with the 5 band eq like pictured in my car.Radios work but the cd player needs to be serviced.I can recommend a guy who does great refurbish work on these units.LMK

I'll tell ya the early Delco CD players suck. Shortly after I got my IROC in '87 GM came out with the AM/FM Cd players with the 5 band eq. I just had to have one and traded in my OEM Delco AM/FM cassette that came with the IROC. Big freakin' mistake. Besides paying a horrendous amount of money for it, IIRC over a grand, it scratched and ruined every CD I tried in it, right out of the box. Dust collects on the rubber wheels that draw in the disk and scratch the sh*t outta them. We had the CD out of the car for warranty repairs a dozen times before GM & Delco gave up and wouldn't address the issue. I eventually got my AM/FM Cassette deck back but not all the money I paid for the CD. I was overly PO'd.

Anyhow, now that I'm onto restoring my '87 I wanted to go back to an OEM stereo from the ghetto blaster that's in the car now. I found an OEM Delco AM/FM Cassette deck that's been modified with an MP3 player jack.



It wasn't exactly cheap, $180, but is in absolutely perfect condition, it's original OEM plus it adds the benefit of virtually limitless music with a good sized MP3 player. No skips or ruined CD's either!

 

myIROC82: I do like that cd player, I was speaking of ones similar to the one in my 99 Firebird. Skips like a bitch and would look so gay in a 3rd gen. How much for one of those units? Also, are the ones you ahve with yellow or white print? I would prefer white, since my Z28 is an '84

 

This is the unit I have for sale.Its a very sought after and hard to find model often advertised on ebay for close to 400 dollars.The radio works but the cd player will need to be serviced.It has white print.Id take 125 dollars shipped if your interested.I can also refer you to a guy who does great repair work on these delco cd players and gives you a 1 year warranty on the repair

 

Awesome, thanks for all the info. I don't need this Cd player right now, but started the thread just for future reference when the time comes for this. Unfortunately , I must dump about $150 into a new panhard bar since my rear end is so far off center, one wheel sits even with the fender while the other hides about 2 inches within it (yea it's bad)

Thats the UX1 option with equalizer. I need that for my 87 IROC. The previous owner who restored it stated it was RPO correct and I later found the cassette player he had in there is the wrong one. My lights don't illuminate. Only the clock area does, however the radio works fine. I will be looking into getting another to replace it when the time is right.

 

The previous owner put a Pioneer CD player in and gave me the factory AM/FM cassette player when I bought the car, but I'd like to get a factory CD player too at some point.

 

I swear 99% of the factory CD players that came in 3rd gens don't work. Count me in that group too. It sure wasn't from overuse. I never even bought a CD until 1992.

When I look back in time, it's a wonder that the CD format even survived. They never really caught on until the 1990's even though they came out in 1983. Darn near all aftermarket CD players skipped. And before the removable faceplate was invented, they had "shaft-mount" CD players. You simply pulled the whole thing out and carried it with you like a lunch bucket.

Check out how expensive this stuff used to be. I got this from a 1987 Player's Challenge book.
