Does anybody rebuild these? I have a mechanical dimming mirror for my '88 Cadillac Brougham. Works most of the time but sometimes I have to nudge it along for the motor to dim the mirror. It's almost like it gets to a certain point and gets stuck.
There should be enough info in the top two posts to repair your dimming mirror. That was part of the intent of this thread.
The most common problem is when the belts become worn(stretched out), and also accumulate grease from other mechanisms over time. It should be a matter of simply replacing (or at least cleaning) the belts. It is relatively time consuming, and due to what I consider built in design flaws I'd rather not try to rebuild/repair for profit. They will eventually fail again. I also do not have a dependable source for the correct belts, but they are very similar to o-rings. If the belts are too tight and/or large it can wear on the motor as it is somewhat of a delicate balance. I have contacted the manufacturer and they do not have parts or even technical information to share.
If reliability is the issue, I would jump ahead a generation or two. If interested, I have those listed in my interior for sale thread, I can sell you one for $20 +s&h. You may have to replace the tab on the windshield though, otherwise it should plug right in. https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/inte...ml#post5800840
If I were you, and wanted to keep and/or restore the one you have, I'd either open it up and try cleaning/fixing it yourself, or find a local friend that is handy with electronics and/or mechanically inclined. It's not complicated but more of something that is more economical to repair yourself, plus when it does fail again you'll know what to do.
okfoz: Yes, the earlier dimming mirrors are much less dependable than the later series which completely eliminated the mechanical parts. And for good reason. Gentex is the manufacturer btw.
I have a mirror from a 1995 Buick Riviera that is auto dimming. For wiring it, does anyone know what is needed? There are two pink wires, one grey, a black and a green wire. The numbers on the back of the mirror are written down.
Any help on this would be great!!

Re: The Auto Dimming Mirror Thread
Green wire goes to the backup light so it will turn off when in reverse.
Black goes to ground
If it has a remote temp sensor, one of those wires might go to that...
One of the wires will be for power, you want it to be switched power so that it is not constantly hot, it will kill your battery...
Suggestion: go to library and look it up, The Service manual it will tell you exactly what they are for... obviously use the 1995 Buick Riviera/Olds Toronado Service manual.

Thanks John, Interesting that the green wire is for the back up lights to shut off the mirror. I assume that is the power from the back up lights?
I may just go to the dealer to see if they have any info. there is only auto dimming , no temp sensor on this one.
I told a coworker at Norwood I told I wanted one of these. Got out to my car after work, and found one in my luchbox he stuck in there. Grabbed the harness the next day and used it in my 85 for a time. Stil have it wrapped up in my parts colllection. Thought this was such a cool item back in the day.

I bought one used recently and I had to solder the point where the connector attaches to the board. After that and finding the correct harness connector it worked on the bench fine. Yet to install it. Winter projects.
