Car Codes

I just picked up a 92 Z-28 and I can't find the codes sheet. I know they are supposed to be in the glovebos but no luck and there is nothing there. I know it's a real Z-28 350 car but I was told by the owner it was a speacial order car with a 5 speed which I don't belive.

Is there any other possible way of finding the codes for the car or even getting a copy of the window sticker?

Thanks!

My opinion is to look at the Vin for the engine code and see if it is a 305.

Re: Car Codes

Look in the cargo storage box and on the lid or inside should be where your RPO codes are .

You are one of the very few who lucked out. Just wondering how that 5-sp got in the car?? It never came from the factory that way. Also did you look for the RPO list in the rear hatch storage box?

Re: Car Codes

82-83 no SPID.
84-91.5 the SPID is in the console glovebox.
91.5-92 the SPID is in the locking glovebox in the trunk.

If the 8th digit of the VIN is an 8 then it's an L98 and someone pulled the automatic and replaced it with a 5spd.

Re: Car Codes

Rumors have persisted for years, that 350/T5 were made, but none have ever been confirmed to have been built that way, on the assembly line.

If the SPID is missing, which isn't uncommon. Some where just tossed under the carpet & not "installed properly". That, or you can go to a dealership & ask for a print-out of the RPO codes for your VIN #.

Probably easiest & best to do that, as people will cry FAKE on your years old SPID, but they can't say squat about a 2009 print out from GM.

If your car WAS built that way...ON THE ASSEMBLY LINE (and not converted at the dealership or by an owner later), you'll have a 1 of 1 (verified) 3rd gen!

Re: Car Codes

Thanks and this is great to know. Everything looks like a factory install but I don't believe it to be ordered that way as I've never seen one. I wasn't sure if the dealership would be able to give me that information.

What are the two codes I need to look for?

what is the code for a 350 and what is a 5 speed.

Thanks for the advice Drew and Stephen

Re: Car Codes

Ok found the codes in the rear glove box and looked them up and it's 350 car that came wiht an auto. So it's not rare but it's exactly what I wanted a M5 350 car.

Thanks for all the help.

Re: Car Codes

That's cool you found what you were looking for. I was going to suggest if the tag wasn't there to try http://www.compnine.com/vid.php as an alternative to visiting your dealership to get a list of RPO codes.

Re: Car Codes

I do appreciate it. There were some codes that didn't work on the code search.

I'm just not sure of the difference between codes L98 and B2L....they are both for a 5.7

Re: Car Codes

In general, L98 is the engine code, B2L is the code for various parts involved when the L98 is installed into a F-body. If you look there are two codes for the automatic transmission, two codes for the 5spd transmission, two codes and change for converting from a mechanical speedometer to electric, etc. The only time some of these codes come up is when pulling up replacement parts in GM's computer system or catalogs.

Re: Car Codes

Hi 92Z28 AZ. Nice car you have there.

It happens soooooo often that some owners/sellers believe they have the "rare" or "special order" 350/5spd (either from lying or ignorance) that it's practically a 3rd gen urban legend. And like a lot of urban legends, it's never actually been proven true.

Go on sites like AutoTrader.com and you almost always find a handfull of "factory" 350/5spds.
I've even seen 3rd gens advertised with "factory" 350 4bbl carbs!

Despite the above, there's nothing more I would like than for someone to actually be able to document the first one.

18 years since the LAST 3rd gen car was made and you really think one (factory 350/5sp) is going to" POP UP SOMEDAY'.
