QUICK!!! 92 GTA 5 speed ????s
Ok a killer deal just showed up in my area for a 92 dark green 5 speed gta. The motors bad but the body is clean. There's no pics of it...so how can i tell over the phone if its a real gta? did many gtas come wiht a manual in 92? anything specific i should ask on? Thanks alot!
Re: QUICK!!! 92 GTA 5 speed ????s
Yeah you could get a manual. Look in the rear lock compartment for the option code label and look for Y84. This is the ONLY way to tell aside from PHS doing a packet on it.
All GTA options could be had on a regular Trans Am in 1992 so it MUST have Y84 to be a legit GTA.

Re: QUICK!!! 92 GTA 5 speed ????s
According to Frankie's website and his figures that he personally got from PHS:
http://www.gtasourcepage.com/92RPOFigures.html
There was 226 GTAs in 1992 (not including any exports)
There was 29 of those GTAs with the 5-speed (not including any exports)
The color itself is low production.
The only 100% way to know if it's a true GTA is to ask the owner to look for the Y84 code on the SPID sticker. In 1992, this SPID sticker would be located inside the locking storage compartment in the rear section.

Get the seller to read off the RPO codes for you, or even better, send a pic.
Don't ask him specific codes to look for. Just ask what they are on the are. And make sure the VIN of the sticker matches the VIN of that car.
Maybe you know somebody where its for sale can look at it on person, or somebody here on TGO will for you.
Without the Y84, it's "just a TA".

I don't have anyone close to where the car is...but its only an hour and 11 minutes from my house according to gps.
I'll ask him to read off all the rpo codes to me if he can and i'll have franks website open while i write em all down. first ill ask for the vin #s though lol.
better yet...he says its got black interior and there was only 22 made in black cloth!

If you have the VIN run it through http://www.compnine.com/vid.php
It had the complete list of RPOs for my 91 GTA... might work for you.

can you tow these cars with one of those 2 wheel tow rigs? like have the front wheels up on the rig than the rear wheels carry the rest? its a manual so wrecking the trans shouldn't happen

Re: QUICK!!! 92 GTA 5 speed ????s
Most car dollies aren't wide enough and the ramps aren't shallow enough to fit a thirdgen with GFX. Also if you pull a RWD car very far, you're supposed to pull the driveshaft so you don't damage the transmission. If it's only an hour away you're probably fine, if you can get it on the dolly. It's a buzz kill when you pull a dolly all the way to the car and realize there's no way in hell the car is going to fit. Been there, done that, called AAA and got a roll back.

Drew,
I think the Transmission issue is for automatics only IIRC... As there is no fluid pumping to lubricate the seals... IIRC it is not an issue with a manual. You might check with the trans board to make sure.

Re: QUICK!!! 92 GTA 5 speed ????s
you can tow a 5 speed without removing teh shaft. Keep it in neutral obviously. The issue is with autos. The internals spin and no fluid is pumping. Anything more than a short trip and the trans can be damaged.

VIN won't tell you....ONLY the Y84 RPO code will.
Without the Y84, its "just a TA". Boy, feels like I've said that before....

Re: QUICK!!! 92 GTA 5 speed ????s
That is true that you can't use a normal, typical, VIN decoder to see if the vehicle is a GTA as a Trans AM and GTA both share the same prefix (1G2FW). There is nothing specific in the VIN that tells you if it's a GTA or Trans AM.
However, with the http://www.compnine.com website, you can enter the VIN and retrieve the RPOs tied to that VIN from GM's records. This will tell if the vehicle is a true GTA or not.
You, of course, already know this. The user just needs the VIN at this point to do the rest. Previously, before the Compnine website, one could only go to the dealer or order PHS/GM package and thus a VIN check wasn't as easy (or as free).

Re: QUICK!!! 92 GTA 5 speed ????s
For moving a third gen, your best bet is to rent the full auto trailer from U-Haul. A friend of mine did this recently. It was $55 to rent it for 24 hours. We went from Texas to Tennessee and back with it. Additionally we had to use wooden planks to get onto the trailer ramps. Using the trailers ramps alone, we'd have torn up the car. The air damn and nose will rub if you don't do this. At least this is the case with Trans-AM and GTA cars made between 1985 and 1990.
Re: QUICK!!! 92 GTA 5 speed ????s
Some of the U-haul auto transports will fit a Thirdgen without problems. The newer ones seem to have less problems. The older ones tend to have clearance issues. It's all in the luck of the draw.
It makes sense the dolly issue would be auto transmission related. None of the cars I've moved with a dolly were 5spds.

Re: QUICK!!! 92 GTA 5 speed ????s
the issue with towing a manual in neutral with the drive wheels spinning, is that if the car is being towed with the nose way up in the air, the fluid can all sit at the back of the transmission and leave the front unlubed, causing it to burn up/ wear out. this happened to a guy on ls1tech not to long ago. may or may not be true in your case, he may have been low on fluid, it just seems dumb to not take the time (10min?) to drop the drive shaft when you risk a transmission instead

Re: QUICK!!! 92 GTA 5 speed ????s
Lets put it this way, a 5 speed setup just made me $500 no problem, that car should also have 91/92 t/a tail lights, which if in bad condition (at least uncracked) will make you at least $100, posi rear axle might make you a little bit, the motor and tpi system will fetch you a nice penny in the $500 range because it's got the better cam and ecu set up for a 5 speed. You're looking atleast $1000 taking it apart if you got the time and energy.
Talk him down to $500 and call the rest your profit.

Re: QUICK!!! 92 GTA 5 speed ????s
I wouldn't buy it just to part it. There are too many blood suckers already doing that. It's counterproductive to the hobby. If you're just going to scrap it, leave it for someone else to rescue.
Bummer that it wasn't ordered with R6P. If it'd been a Formula or a GTA LB9/5spd it would have been a standard option. It was only optional on the T/A. That makes it a 200-205hp 305 vs 225-230hp. Also weird that it's a WS6/FE2 car... They opted for the suspension, but not the horsepower.
At the end of the day, it's still a fairly unusual thirdgen. Certainly more so then any 84, 86, 87. If a person was going to restore one, it wouldn't be a bad choice. A decent exhaust, the oil cooler, rear discs, etc could be added on without killing the car.
