Restoring my Yellow 87 Iroc (Fall photo shoot pics are inside)
Alright guys most of you have seen the thread of mine where I asked everyone what they thought of the car and if I did get it, what should I do to it. Well the car is now mine and it is getting restored back to stock factory form . My goal is to get the car as close as possable to the way it was when it was drove off the lot in 87.
With that said , here is the link with all the pics and info . I hate photobucket and cardomain is faster to use with the insane amount of pics I will have so here it is .
http://www.cardomain.com/ride/3841340
Enjoy guys and like always questions , suggestions , and comments always welcome.

Re: Restoring my Yellow 87 Iroc
i took a ride in that thing the other day, and it still hauls. thats an amazing find too. and mark, i think i know why it went so fast. t-tops were off, no interior spoiler was off, and most importantly the front quarter panel was off. couple hundred pounds right there.

Re: Restoring my Yellow 87 Iroc
I have an even better chance of being at the fest this year now . Got a quote to paint the car today . $750 away from a nice newish car
Found a nice spare tire floor pan too. Need to weld that in because the sale on that paint job ends at the end of the month .

Hey man thanks . Good luck with that search . From what guys on here told me its kinda rare and I have only seen a hand full of them . And the ones I have seen were junk. There was just one on ebay but I think it ended . Was pretty beat up too.

What does this $750 include? You really can't get a decent paint job for $750 these days. Are you doing all of the bodywork, disassembly and prep yourself? Masking? Final finishing and polish? Repainting the black parts black and not yellow? That car deserves better than a slapdash paint job.
Yellow IROC with gold wheels/trim is probably my favorite Camaro color combination. Sweet car!

Re: Restoring my Yellow 87 Iroc
I am doing everything and I know the manager so I am getting a deal. There really is no body work at all. Just alot of preping / sanding ( I want it perfect) . The paint and such alone is costing about $600. They will mask , spray , and polish though. I am getting the "supreme" paint job from maaco. I was going for the presidential but he said that since I am going for stock and buying better paint , I would be getting the same job just cheaper.

I agree . All new badges and a decal kit will be on te way next week and I am hoping to send the wheels out to a place called wheels america. They do amazing work. And it would only cost me $260 for all 4 to be stripped , straightened , curb rashed filled in then machined , and repainted . I cant wait

Here is a little update . Cut up a perfect louver today . Well it wasnt really perfect and it was for good reason . They are now there for a reason .

I also started on a mini resto on my other Iroc. Its going to get a makeover to look just like its big brother . The primer one is going to be yellow like the real car . The red one will be the drag car .

Congrats on the new paint Roc. That's just a gorgeous car! Something about yellow on an IROC-Z, it really sets them off well

this is looking awesome any updates. You should get a picture in the sunlight the one pic has a little bit of sun on it and you can see how bright it is but I would like to see the whole car in the sun.

I have seen the car in person and it looks good. Certainly better than 23 year old factory paint does.

Re: Restoring my Yellow 87 Iroc (Thirdgen Fest '10 pics are up)
My 86 had a maaco or earl shieb paint job when I bought it, and it was no good, but it all has to do with the prep work. If they don't prep the body for paint, it won't stick, which is what happened, mine was coming off in sheets. You can get an ok paint job for under 1K, and yours actually looks really nice. But Ive worked in the autobody/automotive industry for 9 years and a good, quality paint job, where they take their time, pull off all the parts, and carefully prep will cost at least 3K. I did most of the work myself on my car, and when it was time to spray it I had the guys at the dealer I worked for do the paint.

Ya everyone I talk to said that maaco did a hell of a job for the price . I think its either hit or miss when it comes to maaco . I just happened to have one of the better ones by me .
Re: Restoring my Yellow 87 Iroc (Thirdgen Fest '10 pics are up)
You did right by that car. Excellent Iroc.
I worked at a couple Maaco's. They are okay for painting a daily driver that doesnt have to be perfect, but if you want a urethane paint instead of cheap enamel, you have to pay hundreds more, and for a full clearcoat? Forget about it, your lookin at $1000 and it will still have the typical Maaco runs and overspray everywhere. Ive found that I ca actually do a better job in my backyard while its snowing very lightly (I'm dead serious) with urethane Omni (made by PPG) for a fraction of the cost. 2 quarts or Omni urethane plus all additives = $100 for single stage, which is what I use because Im not restoring anything real special.... If you do a full base/clear job it might run you $160 or $180 something like that. Assuming you already have a decent compressor and HVLP spraygun....

Hey would you happen to have a pic of the side of your car with those wheels on it? thinking about getting a set of those as a "play" set .
Re: Restoring my Yellow 87 Iroc (Thirdgen Fest '10 pics are up)
This is true but the owner of the place sees me at every car gathering in my county and knows I show off my stuff alot so they did a better job then usual. Its basically like free abvertisment . I have already reffered 2 customers to him because of the quality of the job done on my car . Plus I did not feel like painting another car this summer .
Thats true there are freak Maaco's that actually do a good job.... I got two cars painted at the one in Sarasota, FL and I was pleasantly surprised to see they didnt have the typical drips and runs and paint on the tires and windows, etc.... And that was the cheapest paint job they had, too... I really like Maaco for the money, like I said I worked for two of 'um. Little secret: The ambassador, presedential, and supreme are all the same thing, just single stage cheap enamel, they just have different warranties, thats all. People think they are getting better paint when they go for presidential or supreme, nope, same ****, your just paying twice as much and getting twice as long a warranty that they are betting you will never use anyway and they are usually right. Thats how they do it....

Re: Restoring my Yellow 87 Iroc (Thirdgen Fest '10 pics are up)
Its been a while since I have updated on where I am at on the restoration. Have not done anything major since thirdgen fest . Right now I just pulled the rear end to replace the break lines that were rusted to the axle . Pics of all that soon .
Here are a few pics from July 4th . I parked up on this 4 story high cliff over by my buddies lake house . Had to snap a few pics .

One with Mrs. Yellow Iroc

So I have also decided to pick up some "play shoes" if you will . So I dont mess up the stock wheels . Thinling about 18 / 19 inch C6 rims . Here is a lame attempt at a photoshopped pic. What do you guys think ?

I think i set of black 18" c5 zo6 wheels with a polished lip would look killer on that car.
trust me i have planned out what i would do for a yellow iroc, lol.
**just want to say that i love ur car & that style is my "Elanor"...factory yellow, 5.7 auto.
take good care of it.
