When I bought my car, I asked the guy if he had the build sheet from when he bought it, since he was the original owner. Apparently, he never got one. Does anyone know of a place where you can run the VIN of a car and get the build sheet? Dodge and Ford do that on their website, but the last i checked GM didn't...

 

Lots of 82s have it in the driver's seat bottom webbing. That's where mine was, but there is really no rhyme or reason to any of this.

 

I'd say 99.999% of new car owners never "get" a build sheet given to them when they buy a car. They are normally tucked away in the car somewhere by a factory worker. And that only happens randomly. There's no guarantee that a car would have one.

Some owners do keep the window sticker which would also list most of the options and codes. Unfortunalty, that's also rarely done and most end up in the garbage.

I found a build sheet under my driver side carpet, it said everything that the car came with

 

well, i found my build sheet. does anyone know or have tips on how to get it out without taking my drivers seat out? i have power seats and dont want to deal with the wiring.

 

Mine had a trim sheet under each front seat , but no build sheet .

 

It should be just four bolts and a single plug in connector to unbolt the seat, and then you should be able to turn it upside down and get in there with something to reach it and pull it out maybe. everything should have quick connectors anyway and shouldn't be hard to remove if needed. Be worth it to have a build sheet IMO, way cool!

 

well i got my build sheet out without taking the seat out, it was just a pain in the ****. now im wondeing if the barcode on it could be used to order a new one

While the trimsheet is cool, the buildsheet is the "holy grail" that we all seek.

 

okay. yeah i found my build sheet, but what suck is that there are pieces missing because of how is was fastened to my seat and the climate the car was kept in. plus, when i pulled mine out, there was a little pink sheet on top of it. it looks like its big enough to be a trim sheet, but there is no writing.

I didn't find the build sheet in my '84 Trans Am parts car, but I haven't looked under the seats yet.

On my '83 Firebird I found it under the B-pillar trim. It was crumpled into a paper ball...

In other words, what would make a complete set of documents for a later thirdgen?

 

There are plenty of tags and sheets on parts, left over from the assembly process, but there was no rule that they were supposed to be left in the car. The idea of a "build sheet" is a real gray area because not all cars got them. The one that's there most often is between the wires/seat foam on the bottom of the front seat(s). The couple I've removed from that location haven't been the same, early cars tend to get a full build sheet, later cars get a partial trim sheet. Worse yet they're a pain to get out of the seat and they're usually in poor condition.

I've come up with a ton of documentation that came with different cars over the years. The list is seldom the same from car to car. I'm not convinced there was a typical selection. Most all of them should have come with a window sticker, owners manual, and warrant/scheduled maintenance folder, but some came with manuals just for the radio, cassettes/CD's, plastic credit card keys, owner's manual jackets, dealer parts/accessories pamphlets, tire warranty books, wheel warning tags, locking lug nut info card, and so forth.

 

I had a feeling that was the case; would be nice if GM could standardize something once in a while.
