Re: VIN decoding
The VIN wont tell you much anyways, Ex. VIN# 1G2FW2186JL25354
(source: The GTA Source Page)
1- Country of Origin(U.S.)
G- General Motors Co.(GM)
2- Pontiac Motors Division
F- Car Line(Firebird)
W- Series(Trans Am)
2- Body Type(2 Door Coupe)
1- Restraint System(Manual Seat Belts)
8- Engine Code(5.7 TPI).........................Useful info!
6- Check digiy(can vary)
J- Model Year(1988)
L- Assembly Plant(Van Nuys, CA)......N- (Norwood, Ohio)
257354- Sequential Production Number
As you can see, not really that much info, and none is gonna steal your car by having the VIN code!

Thats the one I use, and I like it, tells you all RPO codes, and their meanings, etc..

Re: VIN decoding
Unless the vehicles are Canadian, Compnine likely won't have any records for VINs old than 1990.
As y84pauloflondon pointed out, you generally cannot use any VIN decoder and tell you what "packages" a vehicle has as they generally don't have the access to GM records that was kept to tie RPOs and VINs. Most of those VIN decoder sites just tell the general information (Make, Year, Model, Powertrain, etc.). Compnine has a database that actually does have RPOs per VIN.
