1985 IROC?
1985 IROC?
i have an 85 camaro. i was told it is an iroc. it has a tpi engine in it now, i am trying to figure out if it is an iroc. it looks to be an engine swap car. how do i find out what engine i have? 305 or 350/ what the engine is from? it is a canadian car. if you can help me that would be great.
Re: 1985 IROC?
Go to Compnine.com, click on the VIN Decoder/RPO Finder link and enter your VIN. As they have Canadian records, if your Camaro is Canadian, it will show a list of RPO codes tied to your specific VIN. Look for B4Z RPO code if it's an Iroc.

You don't need to run your VIN to see what motor you have. If it's a swapped motor, your VIN will tell you nothing.
You need to pull the casting code off of the block and run it at mortec.com or similar site.
Depending on the year of your block, the numbers you need will be stamped right in front of the passenger head above the water pump, or behind the head on the driver rear of the block. There are also identification numbers cast right into the block that can help you identify it.
There's also the option of pulling the valve cover and checking the cylinder head casting number. There's no guarantee that the block is still wearing it's original heads, but it's at least more pieces of the puzzle.
As for finding out what motor your car came with originally, that's as simple as looking at the 8th digit of your VIN. An "F" indicates that your car came with the LB9 305 TPI. A "G" or "H" identifies the L69 305 and LG4 305 respectively. An "S" indicates the 2.8 v6. I can't remember what the VIN code for an iron duke is.
