Apparently I have a "rare" 1991 Z28

I looked at the RPO codes on my newly purchased 1991 Z28. I was surprised at some of the original options, as some of these things are no longer in the car. It's a bright red hardtop 305 A4 car, but it had the power seat with the cloth interior. I though hardtop cars were pretty "Plain Jane" when it came to options, it was always the T-Top cars that got the special treatment. It has a ton of options for a hardtop. I looked the car up on Compnine, all the RPO's listed are correct, the car comes back 1 of 1 built. I know having weird options doesn't exactly make it desirable but I'm very interested now!

I can get a pic of the RPO sticker tomorrow, I have the VIN # now though, can anybody tell me anything about this car?

Re: Apparently I have a "rare" 1991 Z28

I've seen lots of loaded hardtop cars...not everyone wanted t-tops back then. One thing I like about my 86 is that its a hardtop...compared to the RS and IROC, its super quiet and tight. If it was my only third gen, I'd rather have a t-top car, but that's another story.

My 86 has a power seat as well. What's odd about mine is that the WS6 package in '86, for $665, added rear discs, posi, 245/50/16 tires on 16" wheels and the stiffer bars. My car has the posi ($100), rear discs ($180), and larger 235/60/15 tires ($180), for a total of close to $500. On a car that stickered for over $17,000 24 years ago, I hae no idea why they bothered to save less than $200 and not just get a WS6!

My best guess? The first owner was female, and maybe she wanted a better riding car. Maybe there was a restriction on WS6 when this one was ordered. Whatever it was, its definitely unique and while it doesn't corner like my IROC, it does handle well and the ride is vastly better.

I didn't even realize it had upsized tires until I got it home...I read the door, and found they were original.

Re: Apparently I have a "rare" 1991 Z28

Compnine's website says every car is rare. It's like saying that a squirrel is a rare 1 of 1 because it's the only one living in the tree in your front yard. It's a real 'feel good' website, but it's not very accurate. Even if you compare production numbers for options they don't usually match. For example, sometimes they'll have a production number for an option that was only available as part of an option package, but then the number for the package is off (usually by several THOUSAND units) from the single option. Don't put too much faith into it. The invoice date, and the RPO codes are usually correct for the car, the definitions, and the numbers, are sometimes correct, and the "Rarity" section is complete nonsense. It's nonsense that's derived from a database, and carefully calculated by an algorithm of some sort, but truly useless since it cares about details that no human would give a second thought.

I don't see anything truly unusual browsing through your RPO codes. The options I'd like to see, that indicate performance parts, are missing. The 91-92 Z28's suffer the same issue as 88-90 Irocs. Starting in 88, GM dumbed down the flagship of the line to sell more cars. In 87 an Iroc was the top of the line car, the Z28 was a step down, and then the LT, and Sport Coupe at the bottom. For 88, it was either Sport Coupe, or Iroc. They still made several different levels of car, but on the outside they're the same thing. It changed a little in the following years, 89 it was RS or Iroc, then in 91 it was RS or Z28. The way it worked out, the step from the top of the line RS to the entry level Z28 changed only a handful of parts, the Z28 got the 305TPI, fog lights, hood blisters, the tall spoiler, badges, and the leather steering wheel/shifter/ebrake handle. Everything else was the same as the next step down RS. Of course the top of the line Z28 in 91 added the FE2 suspension (think Iroc/WS6), 245/50ZR16 tires, and the performance options like the oil cooler, 3.23 or 3.42 gears, aluminum spare, dual cats, rear discs, and so on.

Those Z28's with the performance options are generally the ones that are sought after, and would be considered rare. It could be that the production number for F41 Z28's is smaller then FE2 Z28's, making the less desirable car technically more rare, but it doesn't change the fact that most people given the choice would choose the car with more performance.

I left the 88 RS out for simplicity, but the RS is basically the same as the 88 Sport Coupe, the biggest difference was the RS had body colored ground effects, while the SC had silver or gold like the earlier Z28.

This. It seems they come up with their percentages based off of combinations as well. My car, as an example, comes up as 1 of 1, if I add a power rear hatch, the number goes up to a couple hundred (obviously it was an option most people took advantage of with Formulas). Breaking things down to that small a detail makes every car almost a 1 of 1.

A 305/auto car is not rare.

Comp 9 does work pretty good though. My 305/auto RS is 1 of 20.

yeah, compnine is a good resource, but the way the break everything down, it makes every car "rare" but as you all know, or should know, "rare" does not mean desirable or valuable.

FWIW, my 92 v6 bird is 1 of 2 on compnine.....
