Why Bilstein Shocks and ACDelco Struts?

Can someone tell my why Chevrolet put ACDelco struts on the front and Bilstein shocks on the rear of IROC Camaros? Why not use Bilsteins on all four corners?

Did Bilstein produce struts in 1985? If they only had shocks, that would explain it. I don't know the answer but thought this makes sense.

iirc its bilsteins all round, unless the fronts got replaced by a dealership/owner, warranty work when the car was new etc.

Re: Why Bilstein Shocks and ACDelco Struts?

Hello All!!

The 1987 sales brochure states not so clearly, for the IROC-Z, that it was "a modified Macpherson front strut with a beefy front stabilizer, torque-arm with Delco/Bilstein shocks, and stabilizer bar at the rear", it never really mentions the front struts as being either!!

If your going by the colour, Bilsteins are usually yellow, and AC Delco stuff is usually black in the third gens, and my still all original shocks and struts on my 1987 are Black struts in front, and Yellow bilsteins in the back!!

I would buy TwinTurboROC1's explanation that Bilstein didn't make front struts at that time!!

rears are bilsteins w/ the delco name on it. Fronts are just delcos if they were made by bilstein it would have said it on them and they'd probably be yellow.

Bilstein rear shocks debuted in '85...the fronts were always Delco. No explanation was ever in print as to why, as far as I can see.

Re: Why Bilstein Shocks and ACDelco Struts?

I am not the original owner of my 1988 IROC but the front struts are black and the rear shocks are yellow so I know they are Bilstein. A few months ago someone posted a 1985 IROC fact sheet from Chevrolet that listed the rear shocks as Bilstein but never mentioned the front struts. I would like to know if it was to save costs?

My 1989 Corvette had four Bilstein shocks from the factory so I was surprised when I found out the front struts are ACDelco and not Bilstein.

Re: Why Bilstein Shocks and ACDelco Struts?

ive seen alot with ac's up front, i thought it had to do alot with the fe1 fe2 packages. ride handeling vs ride comfort. they definately had rear bil shocks since 85, i know the first two years had modified ac's, but i dont know bout the front struts after that.
