Hi from Texas. My project here.

Hi guys im the proud new owner of a 1992 Z28 5 speed T top. It has the TPI 305 in it and is ALL STOCK!!! I mean nothing has been touched on the car... Now at the same time it has been raged out pretty hard also. I want to do a full Resto Mod and end up with a very nice car. Here are some pics as of today:

I know it looks rough and im a poor man but im hoping to on a poor mans buget make it a nice looking and running car.

First I need to get it running better and looking a little better. I dont know much about TPI cars so I dont know how to fix some of these probs. Im hoping yall can give me advice through this and together we can get another nice third gen on the road.

So heres a list of the probs i have:

Motor
It seems to perform well but smells VERY rich. Also some times the motor will cut all power and wont rev at all. Ill let it sit and idle for a bit and it will start reving again. Other times ill have to shut the car down to get it to start reving again?

Next is the fact that i some times have to shoot some ether in the TB to get it to fire up first time in the morning. It seems to fire up every time after that though?

Trans or Rearend
So something is wining. It wines in 1st, 2nd, 3rd, not in 4th at all, then again in 5th. It also grinds going into reverse but not in any other gear.

Also I left off the light yesterday sidways and took it hard through 3rd. Then I heard a pop noise and knew that i droped a drive shaft. The motor reved in gear and didnt go anywhere. So i slowed down to about 30. I hear another clank and its all working again. Im not sure what happened but this is the only car i have right now so I drove it easy to work and now im hoping yall can help me out on whats going on?

Thanks for any help, advice, or comments and thanks so much for having a site like this dedacated to such a great car.

Re: Hi from Texas. My project here.

motor, check your plugs wires cap...basic tune up stuff, 2nd check your fuel pressure in the morning (leave the gauge on overnight, see what it is at first start) check your tps. worst case you may have a bad pickup or dist. it sounds like u have more than 1 problem with the motor, so tackle one at a time. also check and clear your coded.

trans, check the fluid level and condition
-it maybe time for a rebuild and new clutch... any smells comming from it?

itll take time but you can get it back to being a great car.

if you need more advice just ask

Re: Hi from Texas. My project here.

nice, u may wanna do a rattle can prime/pain if money is tight, atleast it wont be unsightly and will buy time. hood looks much better

check and see if the whine and grinding goes away with the proper fluid level.
also check the rear fluid, if you still got a whine when you let off the gas while in gear you may have a bad pinion bearing (hard to change, can be lived with if not horrible)

keep us posted on the motor.

Re: Hi from Texas. My project here.

There's a delete pulley if you want to run the stock belt, and there's a shorter belt if you want to reroute the belt. Check the tech articles, and do a search.

Well thank you very much. It really needs alot of work though.

There is not a spot of rust on the whole car.

Re: Hi from Texas. My project here.

A rust free car is the way to go! Looks like you have a great platform to start with.

For the engine I agree with previous posts, do a full tune up: plugs, wires, cap, rotor, FUEL FILTER, check the air filters. It sounds like there may be a problem with a sensor or fuel delivery if it cuts out like you describe. It is important to ck the fuel pressure as stated above.

Good luck!

Re: Hi from Texas. My project here.

Well I pulled the AIR system off and used a 96.3 belt. It all worked good and Looks alot better. Ill pull the tube that goes to the CAT in a month or so when I do my headers and 3in exhaust.

Also My fuel pump is getting louder and louder and the car is acting like its running out of fuel at 4k now. The pump is new and the filter is new. Im thinking the sock on the pump may be cloged so im going to pull and check that tomarrow.

Re: Hi from Texas. My project here.

Could be, may also be a "bad" pump from the get go, but its hard to say right now. Did you install the pump or PO? You just cant trust what they tell you, unless they have the receipt from the pump and its date matches their story.. and even then you dont know if they installed it, or correctly.

That's a very true statement, I took the word of the PO of my 89 RS, guy claimed to have replaced the fuel pump and this this and that, after one week of driving the car the fuel gauge stopped working and car doesn't want to stay on (vacuum leak).

Well i know for sure it has a new pump in it. But im afraid that he reused the old sock, the new pump is a dudd, or there is so much trash in the tank that the new sock is clogged.
