Sup guys. I need a little help here. I want to buy a set of side impact moldings. Im not even sure what they are called. What are they called and where can i buy a new set. One more thing, How high are they from the bottom of the door so that when I do find them, i can glue them at the correct height. WHat kin d of glue do I use?

 

They go right on the center of the door body line.
They have adhesive tape on them. Peel and stick.

Right on. Thanks. So i just get the measurement from top to bottom of door and slap that bad boy smack in the middle. Perfect. Thnks agian.

 

I wouldn't measure anything. There's a body line that runs thru the door where the molding goes. Also, to be sure you get the molding on straight without waves, you should use a straight edge along the body line, slightly peel back only one end of the molding and place it in place. while holding the molding against the car, carefully peel back the tape while pressing the molding to the door. If you remove all of the tape and try to stick it on straight, it will not be and you won't be happy.

This is the recommended way to attach moldings and such with 3M tape. Once stuck, it ain't coming off easy.

I've also run a strip of masking tape along the line, immediately below where the molding goes then line the molding up with the tape as you go.

Look for body side molding. Hawk's and others sell them. I will be experimenting with the paintable molding soon to match the GFX on my TA. The pre-colored selection is sparse.

 

I am trying to find the side molding on the passengers side for my sons 1990 camero and need to know where to purchase it. it needs to be solid black..

I'm under the impression they pretty much get damaged beyond use during removal?

 

They are called body side molding. You can see how they are installed on my 82 in the signature. i also have the black door edge guards.

You are supposed to use a heat gun to heat them up and loosen the glue to remove and reinstall them after they have been removed. Yea they do wear out and as old as they are on most of our cars, removing them may damage /destroy them beyond reuse.

The dealership might still be able to get them... That's where I'd start looking first.

 

You can easily ge ta set from the junkyard. All you gotta do is get a hard straight edge razor and slide it under the molding. The material that holds the molding to the body is,,, believe it or not,,,,, double sided tape. Yup. Its that easy.

 

I had some 3M double sided tape in my hatch for about 2 years. I went to get out the tape to mount a mono block amplifier volume control **** but the tape was already dry rotted and had absolutely no adhesive. Is there a special 3M double sided tape that I should be looking for?

 

Dumb question, but....has anyone ever tried just repainting the molding? I assume the paint wouldn't stick as no one else has mentioned this yet. My molding is all there, but has turned pink, which doesn't look so good on a White car. I wasn't planning on painting the rest of the car anytime soon, otherwise I'd just spend the $80 and buy new molding.

 

The orginals are molded "in color" . Yes they can be painted. I have sanded and buffed them out also. My yellow ones were NASTY along the top side but I sanded an buffed em. Not to shabby looking now, not perfect but they are the the correct color now..

 

Same issue with the ones I'm getting. They are red plastic type. Gotta sand them down and have them prepped for painting.

I removed mine, painted them, and put them back on with the 3m double sided tape.

I used a one yard long metal straight edge to get the one straight. I wouldn't trust tape to not have slight curves in it over the length of the door

 

$80 for new molding? Where at? Is that for all 6 pieces?

LOL, reminds me of polishing composite headlights with the drill-sized polishing pad and taping everything off with masking tape. Looks like the results speak for themselves though.

 

I don't mean to be a thread hijacker either, but can someone tell me the measurements of the 87-92 pieces? I've already replaced mine once before, but the body guy cut the pieces on the fenders too long. It just doesn't look right to me.

the fender and quarter panel parts are 4 1/2" long.
The door parts are 55 1/2" long, cut back on a angle on the front only, 55 1/4" to 55 1/2".
