My dad has a 91 Trans Am 5.0 auto that is a blue color that i have never seen on another Trans Am.. anyone know this color? and also the biggest thing is on his vin it comes up as a T-Top Car and its a hardtop and we were told at the nationals they didnt make them hardtop in this color.. i also just got a 92 Formula in the same color for $800

 

I can't say for sure but that color looks like "Quasar Blue" (or possible Medium QB), which was available on the thirdgens.

As for the VIN, they don't tell if its a hardtop or TTop - It will tell if its a coupe or vert, but doesn't distinguish which roof it has.

 

Just did a quick search on factory colors for the 91 Trans Am and it dosent show blue as one of them.It does show blue for 92.What search did you do using your vin to come to the conclusion that your Trans Am came with that color and that its listed as a T top.
Do you have a list of your RPO codes....that should clarify things in regards to color and whether or not it came with T tops.

 

You can also run the Vin through Compnine and get some add'l info there as far as color and other options.

At a local gm dealership they told us it was supposed to be a ttop car, and also a guy at the nationals told us it was supposed to be ttop car, he said he'd only seen one other 90-92 TA in this color. heres a closer pic of the car its a lil brighter in the sun. original paint never been repainted

To elaborate... Colors, don't generally make a car rare. The VIN doesn't tell you anything about whether the car is supposed to have T-tops or not. The RPO codes will, but it's important to check that the VIN on the SPID matches the VIN on the car. If the VIN's don't match then the RPO codes don't even belong to that car.

Generally speaking, unless you've documented something yourself as being unusual, it's probably not true.

 

I almost bought a 1991 Trans Am in that color. Wouldn't call it rare at all.

 

According to this 1991 Firebird sheet, "Bright Blue Metallic" was an option on the 1991 Firebird, Formula and Trans Am but not GTA.



Compnine shows over 3K 1991 Trans Ams with that 98U color. However, that is not a solid figure, but rather, a good indication that it may not be considered exactly "rare".

 

Code 98 blue wasn't even a 1991 only color... 89-91 I think? Prior to 89, and in 92 there were other shades of blue available on the Firebird that were also medium/bright metallic blues.

 

Where did you get that sheet from? Do you have any extras?

 

It used to be when you ordered the package from PHS for your car that they'd include a copy of that document with your options highlighted...

 

I think I got it from John. Drew is correct that PHS would include a copy for your application. Not sure if that is still valid or not.

You'll still want to verify the VIN matches the SPID.

 

Does the car even carry the RPO code for T-tops? It'd say CC1 on the tag in the glovebox either in the console or the locking box in the trunk. If CC1 isn't there, it's nothing unusual. If it is there, make sure the VIN number on that sticker actually matches the VIN on the car. If it doesn't match, it's not the correct decal for the car.

If the VIN matches the car, and it shows CC1 and the car is a hardtop, then maybe GM made a mistake. The chances are pretty slim... Not like it really makes much difference it'd just be a curiosity. It's not like there's a huge collectors market for cars with goofed up paperwork.

 

yes, the vin matches and he checked it at one point. He was just telling me about it last week and i was just curious as if anyone has ever seen this. and thanks for the numbers on the color code. that site is amazing. i've just only seen one T/A in that color and was curious

 

Any idea what he means by "checked"? Without the meaning of checked it's hard to figure out if it has any meaning to it or not.

Realistically, if the car doesn't have the CC1 RPO code then it wasn't supposed to have t-tops, no matter what anyone "checking" the VIN says.

As for the color, I've seen a few, like 10 maybe. Someday in the distant future it might come down to how many are still around, not how many were made. I've only ever seen 4 in my cars color and 2 were in Europe lol.

i finally called an asked, he said it was on a little sticker thing in his glovebox he said he has a copy of it ill try an get it an post it.. he said he looked it up on mitchell? or something like that and it reads as a ttop.. and he also said T/A non ttop in that color that there was like 300+/- in 91.. im sorry i havent been in the car game very long im fresh out of high school.. no clue what an rpo was until now (thanks) lol.. but i have owned 3 third gens and am addicted if that makes me any less of a squid/newbie lol

 

Dark Jade Gray Metallic, it's a 25th aniversary Firebird color for 1992 only just like the Medium Quasar Blue and Jamaica Yellow.

 

i checked out your link.. that is an odd but clean color, here in cincinnati you dont get to see 90-92.. its sad.. i only know of a legit handful meaning 5 at most.. an i sold my white nearly MINT 5.7 92 t/a for close to nothing.. lol

 

wow i just found out they only made 190 of those in 92 with L98.. is that considered "rare" to you lol my stomach hurts now

 

Any 5.7 in a Trans AM is somewhat uncommon as they tended to end up in the GTA or Formula. Also add the fact that the 1992 was the last year, and production on the top models was lower than previous years.

 

i tried this, and its pretty neat. i even found out my rear gear ratio from it lol

 

so 190 builds is just uncommon!? lol jeeze.. im just messin but ive been searching for the car the passed couple days and I FOUND IT told the guy "it was my first car, i got it when i was 14 and now that im old enough to handle it id like to buy it back" said i can buy it back for 2k, so im gonna have to come up with some quick cash.. he said he put only about 10k miles on it so it should be around 85k miles! so im jumping for joy lol

From about 1989 on up the production numbers were so low, and there were so many different options, just about every third gen built in those years is going to be one of a few. The cars that really stand out are the ones with all the performance options... They're the ones people are really interested in anyway.

 

performance options as in? it had 4 wheel disc, dual cats, and i thought it had 3.42 but dunno.. or are you saying like a 1le or firehawk?

 

L98 or LB9 5spd with G92/R6P... TTA, Firehawks, 1LE, etc... Really the only difference between a L98 or LB9 5spd, and a 1LE is the front brakes.
