Its been forever since I posted here... I've been side tracked for a few years now, but am looking to get back into the swing of things. Long story short back in fall of 2007 I blew a rear wheel cylinder on the 87' I parked the car for the winter at that point and well... I've been busy working on my other cars to the point where that winter turned into fall 2010. I've kept it started every now and again, drove it on back roads sometimes. but the rust was getting to it in 2007 and time has not been kind to it since. I replaced the driver door due to it rusting out on the bottom, now the pass door is pretty bad. I just put new rear brakes on it and the old ones looked like they were pulled from the bottom of a lake. the whole underside of the car has taken off with rust.

Its a shame too as my uncle bought it brand new, then my dad bought it from him, now I have it. I have a binder of receipts dating back to the 80s. Its a damn shame but I think I might have to call it quits before I throw too much good money after bad. Afterall its just a Sport Coupe... albeit well optioned. I had plans of putting the z28 body kitting on it. But I think It might be time to find a cleaner car to start with. I've found a 86' IROC thats been off the road for 10 years now... total basket case. But I think I should probably shop around some more. what would you guys do?

Z28's are nice and all, but the Sport Coupes have their own identity. The ground effect look is out of style.

Re: 1987 SC Rustoration
Did I strike a nerve with SC lovers? I like them don't get me wrong... maybe its the grass is greener on the other side mentality... and for a SC it is fully loaded as far as I can tell, power w/dl/full gauges, t tops, 305 but the rust is catching up to it fast in bad areas, fronts of the rockers are starting to go, firewall has a hole in it on the pass side, rear wheel wells are starting to turn to swiss cheese, under the gas cap. I may make a final push to get it through another year or 2

They all look good! Mine isn't a true Z but who really cares? It's still a third gen and it's still fun to drive. Check out my album, it's not letting me put in attachments right now.

Re: 1987 SC Rustoration
Guess I'm the only one that thinks SC's are the ugliest of all third gen's (except maybe for the base model 1982-84 Firebird).

Can't stand the rectangular steering wheel or the holes in the front bumper, and the lack of ground effects makes it look like a cheap no-frills X-Body econobox (remember those?).

The steel 14s don't do much for me either.

My two cents is ditch the SC and get an IROC or Z28 with less rust.

Funny, I think the ground effects on the 91-92 bird make them the biggest eyesore of the thirdgen family. It's all personal taste, I suppose. But I can say that I have never judged the attractiveness of a car based on it's horn button.

My first camaro was an 84 SC. Like others have said, they each have their own personality. I'd like to have a SC, Z28, IROC, even an Iron Duke would be fun.

Re: 1987 SC Rustoration
It would probably be a lot of work but it would be saving another third gen. If everyone just ditches the ones with rust and gets one without it, pretty soon your not gonna have that many cars left to buy because the rest will be in the junkyard.

Re: 1987 SC Rustoration
Figured I post a update... I've been looking around for over a year not too serious I was planning on hacking my SC together for a last year or 2 victory lap before retiring it for good, but I really was having doubts of it ever passing state inspection again. T top rust was getting downright scary, holes in the wheel wells, firewall... the whole 9 yards. I found this beauty on ebay, pictures were junk and the car failed to meet reserve and I figured that was that.. well a few weeks go by and it shows up in the TGO classifieds I talk to the guy get more pictures and then a week or 2 later my buddy and I drive 700 miles to western Illinois and bring it another 700 miles back home.

not really any rust to speak of on the entire car, runs and drives well. Even got 24mpg on the way back home.

its a 87' with LB9/700r4,G80,G92 rear discs t tops and red deluxe interior. I was not sure about the interior colour but its grown on me. I even found the window sticker in the rear storage compartment.

All I've done to it yet is tune up, new hood/hatch struts changed the grille for one not drilled for a front plate. a NOS set of parking lamps. the paint is faded and the clear is shot but I am in love. I'll miss my old SC for sure but I feel I have made the right decision

I notice it has the '86 style bodyside moldings. Anybody know if maybe they used these some in 87 too?

The Berlinetta's and LT's don't have the rectangular steering wheels. They are more like the Z28's and IROC'S without the leather. And as for the nose holes, they did get much smaller from 85-87 and make a great air intake if you're building a ram air set up.

They went to the fat moldings in 88.

Re: 1987 SC Rustoration
I still have the SC for the time being, I may part it out, or sell it whole haven't decided yet. hell it still runs and drives... well needs a brake line and it will stop again.

presently taking a crash course in how TPI works.

Auto or manual trans? If its a t5, I might be interested if you decide to part out. I'm not so familiar with TPI either, but I got the carbs and Ford's EFI figured out!
