350 in a vert

http://madison.craigslist.org/cto/2383636527.html

They never made a convertible with the 350 in it. Well, I called up ASC and they said that they made 22. But, to get one back in 1987, you had to be a VIP.
Have at it folks.

This was probably just a 350 car with an after market job correct?

Also, looks a little rough to be "40k miles".

Re: 350 in a vert

Nothing to have at. The car is a 350 based on the VIN number and is definitely a convertible. It is not a factory convertible because the 87 convertibles were 20th anniversary edition and carried a 3 in the 6th position of the VIN. ASC might have made 22 aftermarket 350 convertibles for execs and dealership big shots. This top does not look like a regular ASC and doesn't have the spoiler extensions extended to the doors like the factory verts and the special editions. The fact that this has a different rear spoiler than the ASC verts, I'd question if it's really their conversion.

Re: 350 in a vert

ASC made a known 4 87 Camaro Verts with a 350... All of them were T-top cars converted... This car is NOT one of those 4 ASC as mentioned by Tony (Ttop350) and Scott...

The conversion (no offense to the seller) looks like a crappy conversion, done in someones barn on a moonlit night with a saws-all..

The car does not look bad for 40K... the interior is a little rough, not horrible...

I thought ALL 'verts were T-top conversions farmed out to ASC? I was under the impression the GM factories didn't build any 'verts in-house.

Re: 350 in a vert

Correct, All Factory 3rd & 4th gen verts were ASC conversions. 87-92 was done off site at ASC, as a complete conversion, 93-02 were all done in-house (at the factory) and ASC supplied the system.

1) I would personally not be afraid to purchase an ASC convertible, factory or not.
2) I would be cautious about vehicles like the one listed above... 350 or not, finding pieces, parts, tops, seals, and other things that make it a convertible will be difficult, at least with an ASC conversion you know that parts are somewhat available, no less than "VIN 3" convertibles... I actually went to the Pontiac dealership with some part numbers I found on my 89 and was able to purchase replacement parts. The Aftermarket ASC convertibles were serviced exactly like Vin 3 convertibles at the dealership...

Re: 350 in a vert

So if all 'verts were born T-Top cars and converted by ASC, were they selected/designated to be ASC conversions before they rolled down the line, and all given a "3" instead of a "2" in the sixth position of the VIN?

In other words, all 'verts that were born to be 'verts before they hit dealer lots should have a "3" in the sixth position, anything else and it was an after-the-sale conversion on a car, even if it's an identical conversion (i.e. Person A buys a T-top/Hardtop and decides six months later to send it to ASC for the exact, identical conversion as Person B who special ordered his car as a 'vert from the dealer)?

Re: 350 in a vert

Technically yes... However I have absolutely no evidence that ASC took used cars and converted them... ALL of my data shows that they only took Dealer new cars, they were drop shipped to ASC and then converted, or they were converted prior to being titled...

Interestingly My 89 Formula 350, for example actually has "convert" on the Title, and the Registration papers... I did not indicate to the Secretary of State (DMV in MI) that it was a convertible...
