What exactly is my car? Rs or Iroc-Z?

I have an '89 Camaro I just got for Christmas. I'm trying to figure out if it is an RS or Iroc-Z. It's been painted white and has the ground effects w/ T-Tops as well. It had a 305 5.0 but has been replaced by a 2.8 V6 by the previous owner for reasons unknown. It's a 5-speed and has the TBI emblem on the passengers side dash. Therefore I put 2&2 together and figured that the orignal motor was a 5.0 305 TBI and by the drivetrain list on this website for '89 Camaros, it's either the 2nd RS or the First Iroc-Z on the list.

-Any suggestions appreciated

pictures might help... headlght buckets, wheels, grill, seats... all of it adds up clues, but all of those things can be changed

I can't imagine why anybody would put a 2.8 in... odd

the VIN number will also tell you a lot

Ok almost got it figured out. Got the car at my house yesterday and I saw that it actually says Tuned PORT Injected on the dash. I checked the VIN number and it says it's a 2.8 V6 but aren't they MBI not TPI???

Something fishy here...bottom line is, if the 8th digit of the VIN corresponds to a 2.8 ('S' I think), it never was an IROC. Unless of course someone changed the VIN, and that's probably not likely if the car has a clean Carfax.

Is the RPO sticker still on the car? I think they were still on the underside of the center console lid in 89. If it's there, cross check the VIN on the RPO sticker against the VIN on the windshield just to make sure someone didn't swap the console lid as well. 'LB9' would be on that RPO sticker if the car had a TPI 5 speed and it's the original sticker. If it is the original sticker and that code is NOT on it, then that's more evidence that the car was never an IROC.

just enjoy the car,,if you have a v6 ,,and want to go for a v8 ,,that's fine...i like my iroc ..i like the look of it and with the 16' wheels ..it looks really nice..but i hate those louvers or blisters on the hood ,,find it looks cheesy..so i kept the iroc hood ,,but installed a rs hood..i like the plain look..have fun!

i'm kind of the opposite... I hate the plain flat base model hood, but I won't sitck a IROC hood on an RS, which is why I added stripes. It does enough to break up the boredom of the hood
