Q About 87 T/A engines
Q About 87 T/A engines
Hi.
Quick question,
If I´m correct, all GTA:s were T/A:s to begin with, so that leaves 10,686 T/A:s with possibilities for LG4/LB9/L98.
Am I correct?
How many 87 T/A:s came with the 4bbl LG4 engine?
Thanks!

Re: Q About 87 T/A engines
Your GTA assumption is correct, however there is no way to know how many TAs came with the LG4. Why?
1) You cannot go by the total number of LG4s built, because those were used in base Firebirds and Formulas as well.
2) You cannot take the number of TPI engines and subtract that from the amount of GTAs/TAs/Formulas built, because you still won't know.
When an engine is offered across different trim offerings, there is truly no way to tell.

Ok, thanks Jason.
I read somewhere about the Firebird Red Book, maybe the answer lies there?
Using http://www.gmtips.com/3rd-degree/dox...n/number-2.htm as a guide and doing some math
leaves 34,939 Formula:s and T/A:s with 18,322 LG4:s and 16,617 TPI:s to be divided amongs them.
So it could be 13,000 Formulas with TPI...

Re: Q About 87 T/A engines
The Firebird Red Book contains no production numbers for options, instead it just lists the price that option cost at the time. LOL It's kind of like if you took the Camaro White Book, and removed all the details that make it useful. There's a really good reason it's out of print.
The LG4 was the base engine for the Trans Am. It's not exceptionally desirable, and they made plenty of them. I can't put an exact number on production, but I can tell you they aren't very uncommon.

Re: Q About 87 T/A engines
There was 25,960 LG4's in 1987
WE know that all V6's went into Base Firebirds, and there was 34,914 V6's in 1987
There was 42,552 Base Firebirds in 1987
That leaves us with 18,322 LG4 Engines for the TA and Formula.
Frankie Rider's page shows that there was a total of 29,757 Trans Am's and GTA's in 1987. Of those 12402 Got the LB9, and 7,818 got the L98. which leaves a total of 9537 Trans Am's with the LG4... I think his numbers are US production only and do not include exports if that helps.

Re: Q About 87 T/A engines
The only problem with equations like that is that all the numbers involved have to be exact figures to get an exact figure for the product. Since all the numbers aren't from the same source, the chances of an error are higher. It might give a general idea, but it's not much better then a WAG.

Re: Q About 87 T/A engines
Actually its quite simple...
According to Frankies page:
29,757 TOTAL Trans Am's and GTA's in 1987.
-12,402 Got the LB9
- 7,818 got the L98.
9537 which leaves a total of LG4's All of which went into the T/A, since it was NA on the GTA.
Not really complicated at all, my 5th grader could do it in her head.

I'm not saying the math is difficult, I'm saying the exact accuracy of the numbers is questionable. It's an exact number given the numbers you're using, but those numbers aren't necessarily accurate. I don't know about you but I've seen a bunch of different production numbers for these cars, and it's not unusual to have numbers that don't add up, or don't match from one source to another.
