First, turn off your caps lock key. It is the equivalent to yelling when you post on a message board. Second, do a search. This question has been asked over and over and over again.

Re: 1987 IROC Z WITH NO RPO CODES???IS IT REAL??

Thanks for reply, sorry for the caps.i have searched and this what i always come up with.........1987 IROCs used two different RPO codes--"Z28", and "B4Z". Plain Z28s will have just "Z28" in the RPO codes. IROCs will have both "Z28" and "B4Z", because "B4Z" is the RPO code for the IROC package, which was added on to the "Z28" package. For 1987, No "B4Z"=no IROC.

However, if your SPID is missing, the eighth digit of the VIN may be able to tell you what you have:

IROC Engines:

F (LB9)
H (LG4)
8 (L98)

--In 1987, if your VIN shows an "8" in the 8th position, you have an IROC, because the IROC was the only model this engine was available in.

--In 1987, if your VIN shows either "F" or "H", the VIN tells you nothing about the car's status as an IROC, because these engines were also used in other models. You will need the RPO codes from the SPID.

--The RPO code to look for in 1987 is "B4Z". For this year, No "B4Z"=No IROC.

doesnt really tell me to much except that i need the rpo code!!!!

Check the back "glove box". For some reason my RPO tag is located there.

Check the vin for "8." Also check the door jamb for tire size. An IROC would have 16" wheels.

They moved it to the rear glove box sometime in 91.

thanks calamitas, the funky this is that there is a rpo tag in the rear glove box but it isnt the same vin as the one on the dash,im thinking the one on the dash is the correct vin.mr james the car has a 305 so it wouldnt have the 8 in the vin,but i will check for 16 inch rims in door jam.thanks

I would surmise that some of, if not all of the interior was swapped to a new one then? Might want to check that out if you're looking for an all original car.

Re: 1987 IROC Z WITH NO RPO CODES???IS IT REAL??

As James stated, your best bet is to check the door stickers and look for 245/50-16 as the tire size. The windshield VIN should always be the "correct" VIN. Swapping parts with a VIN sticker is fully legal, but swapping the VIN tag of a car is a federal offense, so it doesn't happen often. The decal should not be in the rear of the car in 1987. It should be in the console. I agree with the statement that the entire interior might have been swapped. The 4 wheel disc brake setup was not available on the Z28, only the IROC-Z in 1987.

Hello MORREALE5!!

Take the VIN and run it through www.compnine.com they have a VIN breakdown app that will give you the RPO options on the VIN in question!!

Check it out first!!

I have a Blue Z-28 with all the IROC-Z parts sans the Fog Lights, Wonderbar, Borg-Warner 9 bolt, 16 inch wheels, engine oil cooler, and the proper decals!! However, these parts are available, and have been known to be swapped to make an unsuspecting buyer think that he was buying an IROC-Z, when all he was really getting was a Z-28!!

Go into the deal fully armed!!

The wonderbar is an IROC/91-92 Z28 thing. It was meant to b race the steering box against the other front frame rail to keep the area around the steering box from cracking with the larger 16 inch wheels and tires.

It looks kinda like a second sway bar.

Look above the curved sway bar and you'll see the straight wonderbar. This is a factory GM wonderbar.

real IROC or not, a lb9 5 speed 4wheel disc car is one of the most desirable setups, i would go for it anyway. hardtop would be better in my book
