Need help finding my old camaro

I had a 1984 camari z28, HO w/ t-tops. Black w/ beige cloth interior, it was my love. Had to trade it in due to college, etc.. about 15 years ago. I'm looking for it now, I came across my old pink slip which has the VIN number, however trying to do search on the VIN, they want 17 characters, however my VIN only had 16..

The VIN is: g1ap87g8el258945

I'm willing to give a finder's fee for anyone who can point me in the right direction on finding my girl again.

I traded her in back in 1995 with 80k miles on it, almost in perfect condition, it was traded in at alexander's pontiac in sunbury PA. The dealer told me a month later a collector bought it in Montoursville, PA. Thats the last time I heard about her..

Please help in any way possible.. Thanks!!

Re: Need help finding my old camaro

hello Jeff I found the mistake you've made. Your VIN does have 17 numbers, it should have another "1" at the front. From Carfax:

VIN 1G1AP87G8EL258945

Year/Make/Model: 1984 CHEVROLET CAMARO

Body Style: COUPE

Engine Type: 5.0L V8 4BL OHV
Manufactured In: UNITED STATES
Search Results: 9 records found in our database

Hope you find her and are re-united.

Thanks! The dealer must have missed that first character when he did up the pink slip.

I did an autocheck report and not quite sure what to make of it, everything comes back clean however it seems like the title changed hands quite a bit. What can you make of this?

Re: Need help finding my old camaro

Glad I could help. Basically it looks like the car has been sold a couple times, the last time in 2004.
If you want to find the current owner, try taking the bill of sales to the BMV and explain you owned the car and are interested in buying it back if you can find it.

Re: Need help finding my old camaro

According to the Carfax, the last record is from June 15, 2002, when the car was purchased by a new owner. Generally not a good thing to see no records for 9 years, but the title is still clear, so that's a good sign. Might just be rotting in someone's backyard somewhere, but either way it looks like it hasn't been driven much (if at all) in a lonnng time.

Re: Need help finding my old camaro

I wouldn't worry too much. My car hasn't had any CarFax records since I bought it in July 1999.

Re: Need help finding my old camaro

AutoCheck has the last event as a registration renewal on 5/7/2004 in Thompsontown, PA -- nothing since then.

Correct. Carfax and Experian usually pick up registrations and some services so you'd think there'd be something in there later than 2004 if it was still mobile. Most likely, it's been unplugged from the matrix for some time. Don't want to burst the OP's bubble but that's not likely a good thing.

I think the overwhelming odds are it's toast. That said, the only way I can think of to get any additional info is to call the repair shops in this Thompsontown where it was last registered. It's only a town of 700 so maybe someone will know something. People in these towns tend to live for their cars so it's possible. Beyond that, I'm not sure how you'd find out anything.
