When was my Camaro born?

Hey everyone!

I recently was thinking about how far the Camaro has come from what it used to look like, and over the 5 1/2 years restoring it, I realized I never gave 'em a name. Then, it occurred to me that I could possibly also discover when it was born. How would I go about discovering this? The only writing I can find that is still readable is located inside the glove box, I believe it is the RPO? My car is an 89. Thanks everyone!

-Dan

Re: When was my Camaro born?

The information you seek is on the Body number plate. Go here: http://www.fbodymotorsports.com/89camaro

Scroll down just alittle to where it says Body number plate and it tells you how to read the codes.

Well, I have to disagree with the above post. Cars post 84 do not have the body plate, so disregard that information. You can check the door placard. If you still have it, it should tell you at least the month the car was built.

You can also contact GM Media Archives and request a copy of the original factory invoice. They do charge for this service, though. My door sticker says 7/87, the invoice says 7/17/87 and the buildsheet says 7/16/87.

I think some 85's had them and some didn't. Here's the body plate on my 1985 IROC.

Wow, this is catastrophically awesome. I'm pretty certain I am going to do this. Seriously, well done.

Re: When was my Camaro born?

I found the month of the build on the door, which is about 85% faded. 09/88 :-)

Thank you, anyway. I'm still curious about the build date. I wonder if this vehicle invoice will be THAT descriptive.

Okay, I'll bite, since I have literally nothing to go on as my door stickers, while still in place, are completely disintegrated and unreadable... 223742. Also curious about the build date on my engine, out of a 91... 185260.

And I'm quite curious as to how the build sequence works altogether...

I thought I replied to this, but I don't see it!!! I didn't know 85s had them also. That's good to know. Maybe next time, I'll sound more intelligent when I respond!

Most of those stickers were gone when I bought the car: RPO codes sticker gone from the console, driver's door stickers disintegrated and unreadable other than "GM" and parts of the sticker part numbers, and the little stickers with the VIN on them don't have a date, only serial numbers, and they were on the doors, hatch, and driver's side quarter. Pass side fender has a VIN sticker from an 88, driver's is a Genuine GM replacement (sticker wore off at some point now), none under the hood (VIN sticker, that is, I have the emissions stuff), and both of my bumper covers were repop replacements. I literally have NOTHING with a date on it...

185260 May 7, 1991. Is that the six cylinder car?

3.1L V6 out of that car... Still waiting on the date for my 87, if possible (223742). Also a 6 (obviously).

I can confirm this. I have owned two '85 Camaro's; one had the plate and one did not.
