Identify This Car
Hey I recently bought a 1983 Camaro that was listed as a Z28, and the engine was swapped for a 350 from a Nova. The guy did the paint job himself and where the hood louvers would normally be, is painted the words "IROC" and "Z28". I would just like to see if I can figure out a little more information about it. The VIN is 1G1AP87H2DL124682, and when I looked it up it said it was a 1983 Base model but I dont know how much I trust that cause they didnt have much other information.
What are some other ways of identifying what model the car is and what year the engine is (engine VIN?), what trans comes stock with the car, what rear end, HP on an engine from a 19?? Nova? Did they make IROC-Z28 in 1983?
Any information would be helpful.

Re: Identify This Car
Just from looking, it's a 1983 Z28. No IROC until 1985, so there is no way it's an IROC. Came originally with a 305 LG4 (8th digit of the VIN is H). The VIN can't tell you base model from Z28. Stock it either came with a T5 or 700R4 in 83. The rear end is a 10 bolt. The Nova motor... who knows, at this point stock figures probably mean nothing.
Re: Identify This Car
Based on the pics, it's hard to tell what you have. It does have the LG4, V8, but that was available on the base coupe also. The ground effects are missing the emblems which could be because they came from another car. Not saying that they did, but they could have. The rims are not correct for an 83 Z28 either. The taillights, hood and ground effects say Z28, but at this point, who knows. They could all have been swapped at some point. Look under the hood on the radiator support tag and that will tell you if it's a Z28.
If the car is a 3 speed auto, then you have a 200C tranny. If it's a 4 speed auto, then you have a 700R4. They switched over during the second half of 83. If you can provide more details, we can provide more answers.

Re: Identify This Car
Show us some pics of the interior and the engine bay, curious as to what it looks like. You should have a metal tag that sits in front/top of the radiator. That will give you some more info.
I also have a '83 Z-28 thats damn near stock. Mine was repainted also. Looks very much the same as mine. The rims are wrong and the paint job is kinda weird, but if its got a solid body ..........You could get this thing looking almost original pretty easy it looks like.
Here is mine.

Re: Identify This Car
Face it, there was no shortage of 1983 Z/28's so I suspect it is probably a Z/28... If not someone went through some effort to convert a Sport Coupe over...
With that said, you could measure the front sway bar and tell us how thick it is, The Z28 got the FE2 Suspension, I want to think it would be 32 or 34mm thick...
For a 1983 it should be a fiberglass hood IIRC...
Have fun with it.
