Re: compnine gone !!

Who else saw this coming the first time they saw the vast quantity of information on their server? I don't know about everyone else, but I saved a bunch of images for future reference. It's too bad they're gone, but then we won't have to field the "this website says my car is 1 of 1?" threads. I guess it's almost a wash.

Damn, too bad we didn't get a warning that they were shutting this down. I didn't keep a copy of all the cars I wanted to.

And although it's common concensus that the info wasn't perfect, I checked the Compnine RPO VIN decoder on 3 GM's that were around the house and all 3 were 100% accurate.

The database for this must be out there somewhere that any shnook can access it besides going to GM or a historical service for it.

Re: compnine gone !!

Damnit, I never printed the SPID info for my car and it's missing it's original RPO sticker . What happened? Are there any other websites where I could get that info?

Re: compnine gone !!

FYI,For '90 and newer cars I believe you can still go to your local GM dealer and pull info from the service center and parts dept with last 6 of your VIN ?? I did it pre-compnine era.

Re: compnine gone !!

As mentioned the absolute most valuable part of Compnine's website was it's database of exploded parts diagrams. The VIN decoding, and RPO code access was nice, but it's not that big a deal to just go have a parts counter guy at the local GM dealer print it off for you. The exploded diagrams on the other hand, would get a bit tedious.

This really goes to illustrate that when you find something valuable on the internet, you should either save it, or print it out for future use. Websites fail, change hands, and go away all the time.

Re: compnine gone !!

I saved all of the LS-based engine diagrams, but didn't save any of the original thirdgen stuff. I have enough service manuals and assembly manuals that the diagrams are of little use to me since none of those parts are still available over the counter anyway.

http://www.gmpartsgiant.com/

Search by VIN, and it will bring up all the part numbers (albeit many of them are missing the first two numbers but they often aren't hard to figure out) and exploded diagrams. It's what I used to put together all my GM weatherstripping.
