Any way to get the door keys remade

I've got a 1987 trans am with no original keys. I was wondering if there is any way to have the door keys made up from the vin # ? (I replaced the ignition need the door key for doors & T-Top)

Yes.
Go to dealer.
They have the key codes.
Take car and or proof of ownership.

I pulled out my original locks and put in diff stuff sooo no one could get info from dealer.

T-TOP has TIP TOP advice, take your title etc and let them know you want the key punched rather than traced. makes a huge dif.

Your car is TOO old for the selling dealer to keep the key code and sales records!
IF the selling dealer has it it would be a miracle........................

Your best off taking the car to a locksmith and most can make a set of keys in
a few minutes!

Thats how I got the door/hatch/t-top keys for my 84.
It cost a whole $30 bucks !

The dealer did my 89 for me. Only 5 bux and they are GM keys. My dealer is cool ;-)
They have to get the codes faxed in from HeadQuarters. (Always wanted to say that.. haha )
Im not sure when they started keeping that stuff but they do have it.
Just need to call and see what year they started. Anyone know when??
Yes, you can take the locks out and get the code buuuut most likely they haven't been changed so its easy to check with the dealer.

Re: Any way to get the door keys remade

About 50% of the older cars I've owned have had locks that still functioned half decent. Several were missing parts, or had keys broken off in them (bad sign). New door lock cylinders are about $12 from Standard. They can be re-keyed by a locksmith to use the original keys assuming they use the same key blanks.

My Pontiac dealer wasn't very good at making keys. Not their fault, they just didn't have much call for it. Finding a real locksmith was awesome, suddenly it only took a single trip to get keys made and they actually worked the first time. I haven't bothered with hardware store keys in years, gotta love having keys that work without fighting.

Re: Any way to get the door keys remade

All my invoices I ordered from PHS for my 88 T/As had a "Keys" line with two seperate, 4-character, codes. I had wondered if that was the codes used to make keys or if the term "key" isn't related to actually keys? Strangely, one of the invoices PHS sent for one of my cars had that line crossed out with what looks to be a magic marker, but you can still read through it.

GM can get key codes off the VIN but only on the later cars. '87 and '88 cars are hit or miss but it's worth a try. If not, take a cylinder into a locksmith and they can help you out.

I just went to the dealer (went to 2 since I did not believe the first one) and that could not do it off the VIN. I just went in Octo 2011 for my 89. I had a locksmith make mine. Might be different in different parts of the country but no way in St. Louis from the dealer.

Some dealers are to lazy and don't want to deal with it because it takes time and they don't make much. Sad really. find a smalltown dealer and become a good customer and they start will hookn ya up..

Yeah I have that same PHS nfo on my 89s.
Thats another reason to swap your locks from the org.
If someone gets your VIN they can order the PHS and get the keys made off that sheet. Which is kinda Y they atleast try to cross them out.
Keep VIN covered when your out with the car....

Re: Any way to get the door keys remade

A locksmith can get the job done no matter what year your car is. I bought the stuff to do it myself as I go through a lot of cars (usually scrapping). If you have no keys at all, they use the appropriate master key set. There are only about 80 key combos. Finding the match is quick. That key has the code on it so they can punch or us it to copy on a new blank for you in short time.
